- “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you” (John 16:13-14).
Uncertainty breeds trepidation, concern, anxiety, and fear. Truth and understanding help us to cope with difficulties. Jesus was telling them that, though they didn’t at that time fully grasp what lay ahead in what we now know would occur in Gethsemane, they would not be alone. At the cross, in the tomb, and on resurrection Sunday, the Holy Spirit would help them understand. The Holy Spirit would empower those first disciples to not only understand, but to preach and communicate in power the meaning and eternal significance of the redemptive work of Jesus. The Holy Spirit did that for them, He has done it throughout history. He will do it for us.
The world we are experiencing today is scary. It’s scary because of how uncertain it all seems. There are wars and rumors of wars—wars that seem to be existential threats to us all. Media propaganda machines make deciphering truth nearly impossible. Plagues, real and imagined, further threaten and cover us with a cloud of doom. There is even persistent talk of aliens from outer space or other dimensions that make us blink in wonderment. Yes, there’s a lot to confuse and unsettle us going on in this world. It’s enough to make us feel very nervous, uncomfortable, maybe hopeless, and alone.
We are not alone. Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us. His plan is to return and receive us to Himself. That’s what He said (John 14:1-3). But what does that mean? The first disciples didn’t originally understand what Jesus meant. But they eventually did. They came to understand what Jesus meant, with the help of the Holy Spirit. This same Holy Spirit will help us comprehend, too. He will help us know what lays ahead. He will cut through the cloudiness of confusion about the future with a knife of Scripture, clarity, and certainty.
You, me, we, don’t have to fear the future. In fact, the Holy Spirit speaks of a blessed hope and a glorious reappearing of Jesus (Titus 2:13). That is what I intend to share with you and clarify for you with the help and in the power of the Holy Spirit through this book. I pray I am successful. Join me in that prayer and purpose. The future does have darkness; that is the truth. But there is also light to dispel and help us overcome the darkness. The Holy Spirit comforts us with insight into the uncertainties we face, whether individually or globally. He strengthens us and levels the playing field this pivotal prophetic contest for souls is played out on. You needn’t fear the future because the Holy Spirit will help you understand just who holds that future. Come on, let’s see what the Holy Spirit expressly says about the latter days.
