Great pick!

Very spooky tales with fantastic narration! The characters feel fully realized and the creepy ones really get under your skin thanks to the narrator.

Gothic Novel in the style of Classic Gothic Novels

If you love classic gothic novels like the picture of Dorian Gray, The Turn of the Screw, Jane Eyre, or anything by Poe this is worth a listen. I found the narrator's choice of voicing a little strange/strained in places but not so much that it overly disrupted the stories.

Anthology of Gothic horrors

An Anthology of Gothic horrors, with Sardonicus as perhaps the best among them (later turned into a William Castlw film), with perhaps the faustian Comet Wine as the next best. For fans of the Gothic Corman/Poe films

excellent voice and lingering horror

The narrator/voice actor was A+, and the stories were delicious! Lingering eerie Gothic horrors that left me wanting to listen all over again before I even finished.

Delightful anachronistic archaism

I unexpectedly loved this. Didn’t know the author at all. The stories were all delightfully artificially old. Think of it as cozy horror - I found it totally satisfying!

A couple of the stories were too long, but the performances were fantastic and the stories were well-paced and suitably creepy.

Get it for Sardonicus - the rest meh

I love the Mr Sardonicus film so i was excited to get to hear the original. It doesn't disappoint and is a true American gothic classic. The other stories show more their Playboy origins and focus more on bondage and sadism more than being a spooky gothics. Ray Russell wrote in an antiquated style of the late 1800's, which works for some stories, but makes others incomprehensible. By the end of the book I was glad it was over.
