Publisher's Summary

"It's amazing how life goes back to normal, how the world keeps spinning, even after you do something so terrible that it can never be forgiven. You get up in the morning. You eat. You shower. Shave. Use the toilet. And the dream. Always the same dream. There is no escaping it. In my dream, I plunge the knife into a little girl's chest.” - Sam Harlan

Six weeks since discovering the truth behind his family legacy, Sam Harlan has worked with Sister Callie Calahane to learn how to kill vampires, desperate to make them pay.

The woman's voice on the answering machine was intriguing. “Jack, it's Mary Kate. I've got your newest order and.... I need to talk.” Jack Harlan, the legendary vampire killer, was Sam's distant relative, but Jack Harlan was dead. Sam had seen to it himself.

Will investigating the source of the message push Sam and Sister Callie beyond their limit, or will they survive the hard times?

Deliciously dark!!

Book 2 sees Sam still reeling from the events of the first book. Sister Callie Calahane has agreed to help Sam hunt the Vampires and both are now living in Jacks old house. Sam gets a call one day from a friend of Jacks and he goes to talk to her. Sam and Callie have their work cut out for them with this case!!

I loved book 1 and was eager to listen to this one, but I was slightly disappointed with it! It wasn't as good as the first because the plot felt a lot slower and not as action packed. But never the less, it was still a great read!

Poor Sam is still trying to deal with what happened in book 1 and is still out for revenge. Missing his mentor, he and Callie have to try and train themselves and learn all they can before they have to go hunting again. My heart broke for Sam, but I was also impressed with his tenacity and willingness to do what's needed. He grew a lot during this book and I'm happy he did! Callie, meanwhile, is one plucky Sister. Her faith is very strong, despite what happened to her sister in book 1. I loved seeing her power against the Vampires!

In all, this was a good edition to the series. It wasn't as fast paced as book 1 but it still held my attention the whole way through, and it makes me excited to see what else is in store for Sam and Callie! These characters are growing on me!!

David Loving did a great job bringing this to life. He had plenty of different tones and voices for the characters, and was easy to listen to.

I couldn't wait!

I love this series so much that I couldn't even pause to write this review before switching to book 3! As with any book there are parts where I'm not 100% thrilled with something, but this series and narration have minimal spots that make me feel that way. I cannot wait for book 4!

The first one was better

I liked this story but the first was better. This one was a little slow and I didn't really feel any emotional involvement with the characters. I loved the first book and will listen to the third in the hopes that it picks up again!

Uncomplicated listen

Despite enjoying this book, it is not a book I feel I need to listen to again. It kind of reminds me of a Jack Reacher story. It's not big on character development, but, it had me (if not emotionally invested) intrigued to the end. I would like to listen to the first (this being the second) book in the series.
I enjoyed how the vampire hunter took on the characteristics of the vampire and the special capabilities of the 'nun'.
Although there is the occasional swearing, there are not any sex scenes or overly detailed violence. The plot was not too convoluted or mysterious and I expected the good guys to win but was not sure how. A little more detail on the motivations and history of the vampire and victim family members would have helped round out the story.

The narrator did an ok job. His character voices however, are limited in range and when the book mentioned a character spoke with a heavy accent, the narrator did not use an accented voice. I would listen to another book by this narrator.

Second book not as good as first

I received this audiobook free for an honest review. When I received this book and realized it was book number 2, I bought book 1. I didn't think this book 2 was as good as book 1. My husband was laughing at me when I was listening to this book and talking to Sam, telling him how stupid he was not to prepare properly to fight the vampires. The story seemed to drag on. I believe the substance could have been stronger with fewer words.

I really enjoyed this one

I started the series with this book, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I didn't feel like i was missing too much from the first book. The story line was an interesting take on the vampire hunter genre. I thought the characters and dialog were engaging and the narration was good too. All in all, a very enjoyable experience.

Awesome read.

What’s not to love about a traditional vampire hunter book, except now with a twist. This book takes it to another level. Great narration and flawless lines, make for an exciting and invigorating read.

Not Your Average Vampire Hunter

Hard Times is a fast paced story that is not like your typical vampire hunter books. This story is a refreshing change from the norm. David Loving does and excellent job bringing the characters and story to life. I look forward to more from this Author and Narrator

Interesting Vampire Hunter story

Despite this being book 2 in a series and me not having read the first one, I found this book to be an accessible and enjoyable entry into the series with references to the first book being fairly self-explanatory.

The book focuses on the adventure and troubles encountered by the new vampire hunter Sam Harlan when he is asked to investigate the disappearance of a young woman by a friend of his former mentor, the main member of the supporting cast is a former sister of the church.

The mechanics of vampires and vampire hunting in this book's world has some interesting little tweaks such as silver being a primary weapon, crosses having the potential to be a more offensive weapon rather than simply a means of defending and the vampire hunter gaining power (and darkness) from the act of killing vampires.

One crucial thing that power gain didn't also include was greatly accelerated healing, that is one of the more usual ways that books often seek to level the playing field with the stronger supernatural creature and the author does a good job of conveying how much the hero was getting steadily more worn down and battered over the course of this book.

I thought that in general the narrator did a pretty good job with this book, but he mainly did best with the main two characters, the various supporting cast were clearly voiced rather than being given fully distinctive voices.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and will definitely look out for subsequent books in the series as well.
