A backstage pass to the groundbreaking, hit musical Hamilton, winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Eleven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, including the award-winning libretto, behind-the-scenes photos and interviews, and exclusive footnotes from composer-lyricist-star Lin-Manuel Miranda, now streaming on Disney+ with the original cast.Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking musical Hamilton is as revolutionary as its subject, the poor kid from the Caribbean who fought the British, defended the Constitution, and helped to found the United States. Fusing hip-hop, pop, R&B, and the best traditions of theater, this once-in-a-generation show broadens the sound of Broadway, reveals the storytelling power of rap, and claims our country's origins for a diverse new generation.

Hamilton: The Revolution gives readers an unprecedented view of both revolutions, from the only two writers able to provide it. Miranda, along with Jeremy McCarter, a cultural critic and theater artist who was involved in the project from its earliest stages -- "since before this was even a show," according to Miranda -- traces its development from an improbable performance at the White House to its landmark opening night on Broadway six years later. In addition, Miranda has written more than 200 funny, revealing footnotes for his award-winning libretto, the full text of which is published here.

Their account features photos by the renowned Frank Ockenfels and veteran Broadway photographer, Joan Marcus; exclusive looks at notebooks and emails; interviews with Questlove, Stephen Sondheim, leading political commentators, and more than 50 people involved with the production; and multiple appearances by President Obama himself. The book does more than tell the surprising story of how a Broadway musical became a national phenomenon: It demonstrates that America has always been renewed by the brash upstarts and brilliant outsiders, the men and women who don't throw away their shot.

Would you listen to Hamilton again? Why?

I would listen to "Hamilton: The Revolution" again before seeing the musical to get more out of the musical. I listened to the audiobook of Ron Chernow's "Hamilton" first and immediately afterwards began to listen to Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Hamilton: The Revolution." But I found I could not understand and appreciate the story of the making of "Hamilton" the musical without first listening to the music. So I stopped listening to "Hamilton: The Revolution" in order to listen to the cast album, and then I resumed and finished "Hamilton: The Revolution," knowing the background of the songs and actors. Enjoying Chernow's "Hamilton" and the "Hamilton" cast album increased my appreciation and enjoyment of Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Hamilton: The Revolution."

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hamilton?

The most memorable moments in "Hamilton: The Revolution" was listening to Lin, actors, and teachers describe the impact of "Hamilton" on kids who felt they did not belong to America until now. I was so happy for our youth, I wanted to cry. I cannot wait until "Hamilton" is licensed for youth to perform at high schools and colleges. Hip Hop "Hamilton" is the musical for our generation.

Any additional comments?

Read Chernow's book and listen to the cast album or see the musical first before listening to "Hamilton: The Revolution." You will get more out of your listening experience. It helps to know the songs they are referring to.

What did you love best about Hamilton?

Loved all the story of the the creation of the show and the reaction of young people… I got the cast album as well.. and was able to appreciate the songs (and stories in them) and the history of the performers of them, as I learned about the creation and the casting.

What did you like best about this story?

It's a wonderful way to learn about the show before you see it.. I will appreciate it all the more!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Many moments actually moved me to tears -- and I was listening to it as I walked in the mornings.. so folks on the street wondered about me! Other sections had me smiling as I walked

Any additional comments?
