Through wonderfully descriptive writing, Simon details the work of fifteen detectives, three sergeants and a lieutenant charged with investigating dozens of Baltimore's 234 murders that year. Simon takes listeners inside the detectives' lives, describing the frustration of departmental red tape and politics, the bursts of energy and moments of despair.

With an eye for the scenes of slaughter and pursuit and an ear for the cadences of cop talk, both business and banter, Simon gives this brilliant, harrowing account its authenticity and fascinating edge.

Simon plants us so close to these detectives that we see everything--the Police Department, the prosecutors, the courts, the city of Baltimore itself--from their angle. This is a never-before-seen look at what it's really like to investigate murders for a living.©1997 David Simon; (P)1997 Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio Publishing, Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio Publishing, A Division of Random House, Inc.

This is a short book but it gives great insight into the life of a detective and you can see how the wire was created from this book. There is some fascinating stuff in here, I listen once every six months.

Incredible, the inspiration for “The Wire”

that cannot read? illiteracy is not a good "sound". learn how to read and/or how to correct your own errors (it is quite obvious that there is no editing process for audiobooks.

Having watched the Homocide, The Wire, and The Corner series several times I never read the Homocide book. I finally got around to it and I am glad I did. It was well written and detailed. The recording is grainy and kind of low. Almost as if it were recorded using a smartphone. It took some getting used to when compared to the other audio books I have listened to that sound robust and well mixed. Still an excellent read or listen.

One of the best books ever written and Reed Diamond is the best narrator I ever heard.

One of my favorite books of all time.

Much more realistic and less dramatized. It paints a bleak portrait of life as a detective. Short. Entertaining. Worth reading if you’re a fan of The Wire or true crime.

Not like the wire
