Publisher's Summary

The New York Times best-seller - part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series Halo!

The 26th century. Once considered clandestine, the Spartan-II program has now gone public. Tales of armored supersoldiers fending off thousands of Covenant attacks have become the stuff of legend. While the Master Chief defends a besieged Earth and the myriad factions of the Covenant continue their crusade to eliminate humanity, an ultra-secret cell of the Office of Naval Intelligence known as “Section Three” devises a plan to buy the UNSC vital time. It will need hundreds of willing soldiers, though - and one more Spartan - to get the job done.

The planet Onyx is virtually abandoned and the perfect place to set this new plan in motion. But when the Master Chief destroys Halo, something is triggered deep within Onyx: Ancient Forerunner technology stirs, and fleets of UNSC and Covenant vessels race to claim it and change the course of the Human-Covenant War. But this reawakened and ancient force may have plans of its own....

Good overall

Reader made everyone sound, weak, old, or fragile. All Spartans sounded like they were about to cry. Otherwise was very good

Amazing Story

Personally, I am a big fan of the HALO series, games, novelizations, etc. Mr. Davis reads this with amazingly. The voicing of different species was handled well, and I was able to tell when the perspective had switched, from human to alien, based solely on the voice acting.

Love these books

Eric Nylund’s Halo books are by far the best of the halo books in my opinion. The space combat is especially fun to imagine as I listen.

This is an excellent Halo Book although I felt like there is a cliff hanger. I would love to know what happened to Blue Team within the sphere and how they escaped

A fantastic prequel to the Kilo Five trilogy.

This is one of my favourite Halo novels. I’ve read it before in the past and this is the first time I’ve listened to it. The performances are spot on and I love the accents the narrator gives the Elites in the story. Lore-wise this book fills in a gap in plot that the games don’t ever think to touch on. It’s part of a few books that really help you understand what was going on in the background of and in between the first three games. Books like Halo: First Strike and Halo: Broken Circle both fill this plot gap. And if you’re a Halo fan like I am, I think this book and some of the others are really worth listening to if you want to understand how certain characters got where they are in the games.

I’m currently attempting to listen to all of the Halo novels in chronological order. Starting with Halo: Cryptum and ending with Shadows of Reach just before Halo Infinite gets released this winter.

If you’re doing the chronological marathon then you’ll know that the next three books are the Kilo Five trilogy, written by Karen Travis. I’ve already listened to them before and I’m looking forward to listening to them again now that I’ve finished Ghosts of Onyx. Knowing that those books are spiritual sequels to this one makes everything that happens in this book all the more exciting. You could think of Ghosts as part one of a “quadrilogy” or just a prequel but either way, it sets the scene perfectly for the events of the next three books.

Long story short, I highly recommend this audiobook if you’re in the mood for an action packed, science fiction adventure that takes unexpected turns. Or simply, if you’re in the mood to understand what on Earth is going on in the original three Halo games, this book is for you.

Absolutely Amazing!

I'd like to start this review by saying I wasn't keen on Jonathan Davis (narrator) after having Todd Mclaren, but, he soon grew on me, the story introduces the Spartan III program which started slow but gives so much back story to what happened and how certain things fell into place (no spoilers). After the first section, it picks up and doesn't stop. Honestly I had 'The Flood' as my favourite, because I'm a huge fan of the games, but this one is definitely a lore filled adventure, if you haven't listened to this or debating... trust me, it's amazing!!!
