Story
Do you need to be able to read music to play guitar? These are some of the first questions I’m usually asked as a guitar teacher. Over my 25+ year career as a musician and guitar teacher, I have come across many guitarists who cannot read a single note of music or tell you a major triad from a min7flat5 chord. In fact, I think it’s one of the most hotly debated topics in guitar playing circles anywhere around the world, certainly in the online space. I say relax! Which person is a better player? That’s a 100 percent subjective judgement, and it’s not for me to decide.

Local guitar teachers seem like a great option at first, but you could risk getting stuck with a wannabe rock star who can't really teach you. Or you could try books, but most books are far too bulky and will leave you no better than where you started. Strumming a chord or two is not enough, nor is shredding a mindless solo piece. If you do not understand the essentials of music theory, you will never learn to truly play the guitar.

In Play It Loud, Brad Tolinski and Alan di Perna bring the history of this iconic instrument to roaring life. It's a story of inventors and iconoclasts, of scam artists, prodigies, and mythologizers as varied and original as the instruments they spawned. Play It Loud uses 12 landmark guitars - each of them artistic milestones in their own right - to illustrate the conflict and passion the instruments have inspired.

Publisher's summary
Guitar fretboard magic! Unlock all the notes in six simple exercises!
Why would I want to learn all the notes of my fretboard?
Over my 25+ year career as a musician and guitar teacher, I have come across many guitarists who cannot name all the frets on the fretboard. Learning the guitar or music theory for that matter, with no knowledge of the basic fundamental organization of the fretboard is a bit like trying to learn to swim without getting into the water. While not impossible, it just doesn’t make much sense! This book will make sure you don’t wind up like countless other guitar players who can’t name the most basic building blocks on their instruments: the notes!
Here’s why you should learn the fretboard:
- Understand how the instrument is arranged for melodic and harmonic application
- Create a mind map that lets you navigate the fretboard seamlessly and quickly
- Communicate musical ideas to the written form much faster
- Create a deeper bond with your instrument
Here’s what you’ll find inside:
- The easiest system of learning the fretboard, organized into six easy exercises
- A step-by-step approach that will give you results fast and painlessly
- All the charts and notation/tabs to show you exactly what to practice
- Beginner-friendly - no prior music theory experience necessary!
- Blank tab charts and chord diagrams to design your own versions of the exercises
- Includes access to a free video companion course
So, what are you waiting for? Start your guitar learning journey now! Or, simply continue your journey and make your guitar practice even more satisfying by scrolling up and clicking the "buy now" button right now!

Best book on guitar note memorization I've found
I've picked up a lot of them. These books are usually filled with fluff, nonsense and "tricks to help you remember". This book cuts all of that out and puts the power in your hands through 6 super simple exercises that truly do allow you to "magically" memorize the fretboard forever! I was a little skeptical but the audio presentation is very clear, including played examples that you can follow along with AND the pdf is included which is great because I can follow along and even use the book when I'm not listening to it! AND - there is access to the author's free companion course where he actually SHOWS you how to play the exercises. For the minimal fee for this title I HIGHLY recommend it! OH - and be sure to sign up for his email list - because you get a COMPLETELY free BONUS BOOK just for doing so! I'm a huge fan! I'm gonna share this with all my guitar playing friends. I can't wait for the next book in this series. A++

A delightful beginning!
I've followed the series of audiobooks by this author and have picked up so much over a short period of time. This was one of the books I picked up that introduced me to, and familiarized me with the fundamentals of playing guitar. For the record, I have no previous experience playing instruments. The pace is perfect, even for someone like me (although I often choose to pause, play and apply what I'm learning, and then return to the audiobook). It's a must for new guitar players!

Great purpose driven bit-sized lesson
I’ve tried playing the guitar for years with little success. After listening to this book I picked up the guitar again and completed the first lesson. The author’s simple approach made it easy to understand hitting the notes on the fretboard. If you are struggling to learn the guitar then this book is for you. Highly recommended!!!

A really useful, easy to follow along guide
This audiobook greatly helped me to learn all the notes on my guitar neck in just a few days. I had previously struggled to commit all the notes to memory-much to the dismay of my guitar coach! The exercises start simple and are very easy to follow along with. Just a few minutes a day really sped up my learning process. The downloadable PDF has everything all laid out, with diagrams and score paper too. Great stuff Nick!

Efficient theory, skewed timeline
Time required is significant (as should be expected), he suggests practicing up to 15 minutes a day but later states it isnt an unreasonable goal to learn the fretboard in 24 hours over 1 or 2 week period. That would require 1.7-3.5hrs/day of practice. If you follow the instruction at maximum 15min/day it would take you 96 days to complete 24 hours of practice. So anywhere from 1 week to 3 months to memorize... Definitely sound methodology though. Straight to the point no fluff. This is literally about dedication and willpower to learn and change. Similar instructions to these are available for free with easy searches on popular online video platforms but this information and the included .pdf are arranged quite well.

A magical guitar book for learners of all levels!
This book delivers on its promise of an easy system for memorizing the fretboard! As long as you follow the steps, it’s a foolproof “magical” system.
Audio quality is superb, which is a must for any music study audio book. It’s honestly like having a guitar teacher right in the room with me.
I was blown away by the inclusion of a free video course! These video lessons have become a go to in my practice sessions.
My playing has improved a hundred fold since following this program, I can’t recommend it enough to learners both new and seasoned who want to master the fretboard!

Very good listen
I used to play drums when I was younger and my wife won't let me have a drumkit in the house anymore , so wanted to take up a new musical instrument and was recommended this audiobook by a friend , the author really knows his stuff and I've picked up playing the guitar fretboard in no time at all. Teaches u the basics on where to start , can't wait to learn more and will be looking to see if this author has anymore books where I can learn from as I want to become a pro. Great book
This book is a gem it actually does what it says. No none sense and is straight to the point. Guitar playing is my new passion I rediscovered it during the first lockdown and more to the point it kept me sane through it. I used to play half heartedly a long time ago. This book has definitely helped me learn with no confusing tricks and Gimmicks or outlandish claims. It was very well read and easy to follow. The narrators lovely calming voice was very clear making me want to listen and take in what he was saying. It is Excellent value for money and an absolutely must for both beginners and someone who’s been playing for a while. I would definitely recommend this audiobook and I’m going to check out this authors other books.

Learning all the frets on my guitar has been long overdue for me. My wife gave me this book, and it finally gave me the push I needed to improve my skills. I love that it is an audiobook and the author packs a ton of information into 20 min. The exercises that are discussed are easy to do, and I saw an instant improvement. If you're like me and you've never spent enough time to thoroughly learn the fingerboard, this is the perfect book.

Nick is the guy to go to!
After listening to this, I feel beyond prepared to start my guitar journey. Nick is approachable, knowledgeable, and is really easy to learn from. The timing of how he teaches is perfect. It's not too long, and it's not too fast either. I can absorb what I'm learning as I go. He includes so many great resources; I don't see how you couldn't do well. I am looking forward to learning more from this author and teacher, and I highly recommend him if you're looking to start learning guitar yourself!

Easy and quick memory technique!
Wow, I cannot believe this method works, it really is memory MAGIC! There are such clear and simple instructions to help you learn all of the notes off by heart on your fretboard, it's amazing!
What I really liked is that the author also provided so much bonus material, my favourite was the free video course which goes hand and hand with this audiobook. It was extremely helpful as I am more of a visual learner. As well as this, Nick provides a free PDF of blank chord diagrams which again helped me memorise the chords a lot quicker.
Overall, this book is amazing value, in such little time you learn a huge amount. Thank you, Nick I can’t wait to explore more from your bookshelf!

You can tell the difference
Straight away it's clear this fretboard memory practice has been carefully designed by a professional guitarist.
Not only is each exercise extremely helpful, but the author also explains WHY it is important we follow his instructions precisely. I never felt like I was mindlessly following instruction without actually knowing what I was doing and why (which surprisingly can happen quite a lot with instrument learning exercises!)
So well put together and really effective.

Great for beginners that is simple to follow I fou
I found this book really easy to follow and as a beginner I hadn’t even realised before buying that this was what I was actually struggling with.
I was getting a little disappointed by my lack of progress with the guitar and had pretty much stopped trying to learn before I gave this book a try. The exercises are simple and easy to follow especially when you use the free pdf he includes with this audible book.
I like his enthusiasm for teaching and really enjoyed listening to this book.

Super easy and quick to learn
This is a great audiobook to help any guitar player to memorize and understand how this particular instrument is arranged. The accompanying PDF provides a min map that allows you to follow the fretboard effortlessly. I strongly believe this audiobook will serve well for those who are beginners and the charts provide a great way to learn the guitar. A must-have for anyone who wants to learn guitar.

Just about every human being knows how to listen to music, but what does it take to make music? Is musicality something we are born with? Or a skill that anyone can develop at any time? If you don't start piano at the age of six, is there any hope? Is skill learning best left to children or can anyone reinvent him-or herself at any time?

Do you need to be able to read music to play guitar? These are some of the first questions I’m usually asked as a guitar teacher. Over my 25+ year career as a musician and guitar teacher, I have come across many guitarists who cannot read a single note of music or tell you a major triad from a min7flat5 chord. In fact, I think it’s one of the most hotly debated topics in guitar playing circles anywhere around the world, certainly in the online space. I say relax! Which person is a better player? That’s a 100 percent subjective judgement, and it’s not for me to decide.
