Publisher's summary

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, The Signalman by Charles Dickens, Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Dracula by Bram Stoker, and a bonus story, "The Monkey’s Paw" by W.W. Jacobs.

More than 30 hours of great classic horror is brought to haunting new life by three A-list narrators whose performances are nothing short of electrifying.

“At once terrifying and heartbreaking,” raves AudioFile Magazine about Clive Hayward’s Earphones award-winning reading of Frankenstein that starts the collection.

“Both narrators are outstanding,” says AudioFile about Audie Award-winner Derek Perkins and Earphones Award-winner Alison Larkin’s narration of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and "The Yellow Wallpaper".

Frankenstein was born when Mary Shelley entered a competition with poets Lord Byron and Percy Shelley to see who could write the best horror story. Read by Clive Hayward.

The Signalman, a ghost story by Charles Dickens, was influenced by a fatal train accident he survived, though he was forever haunted by the event. Read by Derek Perkins.

Carmilla is Le Fanu’s tortured, powerful female vampire who set the stage for so many vampires to come, including Dracula. Read by Alison Larkin.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde grew out of a horrifying nightmare Robert Louis Stevenson had one night in Bournemouth, England, in 1886. Read by Derek Perkins.

"The Yellow Wallpaper" sprang from a catastrophic nervous breakdown Charlotte Perkins Gilman had following the birth of her daughter. Read by Alison Larkin.

Dracula, by Bram Stoker, is the quintessential vampire horror story that set out many of the conventions modern fantasy writers still embrace. Read by Clive Hayward.

"The Monkey’s Paw", by W W Jacobs, is a supernatural short story. Read by Clive Hayward.

Excellent narrators

This is the first I’ve listened to this compilation. I’ve read some of these stories before and I enjoy these classics, so I thought I’d give the audio version a try.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by these narrators( Clive Hayward, Derek Perkins, Alison Larkin ) and I would listen to them all again. They did great narrating these books. Each brought out the flair of an old time story and brought the stories to life. A great way to enjoy these classic horror stories. Each narration had a variety of character voices and the male and female voices were well done.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Classics.

I'm not going to comment on the stories themselves because... Well there're called classics for a reason!!! Each narrator did a great job with these stories. They were clear and easy to follow, they read them well and injected life into them. Great collection of stories and well worth a credit.

Fantastic Selection and Narration

This selection is a fantastic selection of stories. It is perfect for anyone who loves classics or would like to get into reading/listening to them. I don't tend to read or listen to horror, but I do enjoy reading classic horror. This book is also a fantastic deal!

Alison Larkin is a narrator I have always enjoyed. Her voice is incredible. She is so distinct and keeps you listening. Clive Hayward and Derek Perkins were also great, I liked the change in narrators. It kept the 31 hours changed up a bit. It felt like the smaller chunks that they should feel like (given that they are multiple stories.)

A Great Collection of Classics for a Great Deal

This is a great bundle of classics. Some of them were really familiar to me: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Yellow Wallpaper. Some of them were less familiar: Carmilla, The Signalman, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The narrators were all great and nailed it. Personally, I enjoyed Carmilla best. I'd never read it before and found it enjoyable. It was much faster paced than a lot of books from the same period. Really, there wasn't a single bad point in this collection. It's the perfect collection to keep you entertained through plenty of stormy nights and a great deal with four books and three short stories included.

I love Alison Larkin as a narrator and Clive Hayward and Derek Perkins were great as well. All three gave delightful, talented performances and made these classics all come to life.

I was given this book for free at my own request in exchange for a fair review.

Navigation issue resolved!

Please note, regarding the review concerning 'no titles for chapters', the publisher has ensured that future downloads will include a 'navigation guide'. The contents of which are below:

Publisher’s note: We are delighted you have purchased Great Classic Horror Stories and hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed producing it.

In order to streamline its process and ensure faster downloads, Audible divides books and names files in ways that are not always intuitive to the listener or as intended by the publisher of the content. This is especially true for collections of stories.

Thus, to avoid confusion, we have recorded the title of each book before each chapter (for example, 'Frankenstein Chapter 1', 'Frankenstein Chapter 2', etc.)

To help you further, we’re happy to provide the following guides to help you navigate the contents of this audiobook.

There are two ways to download a book from Audible. As a Single-Part download or a Multi-Part download.

Here is the guide for the Single-Part download:

File 1--intro
Files 2-26—Frankenstein
File 27—The Signal Man
Files 28-43—Carmilla
Files 44-53—Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
File 54—The Yellow Wallpaper
File 55-82—Dracula
Files 83-85—The Monkey’s Paw
File 86--outro

Here is the guide for the Multi-Part download:

Part 1
File 1--Intro
Files 2-26—Frankenstein
File 27—The Signalman
Files 28-29—Carmilla (Chapters 1-2)

Part 2
Files 1-15—Carmilla (Chapters 3-End)
Files 16-25—Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Additional note: It is possible that the individual app or player you use will give you a slightly different experience than the one describe above. If this is the case, we hope the convention of reading the story title before each chapter will give you a suitable guide to where you are in the program.

Great classics

An excellent collection of horror stories that are a must read. The narrators bring the characters to life. Dracula in particular with its wide range of characters. Each one has their own unique sound. Brilliantly done.

Hooked until the end

Loved listening to all these classics! it was great being able to listen to 6 stories in 1 audiobook. Loved the way Frankenstein was written.... the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde enthralled me... Carmilla kept me guessing... Yellow wallpaper was great... Dracula kept me on the edge of my seat.... and Monkey Paw was a good story even though it was a bit short. Will be listening to this again soon.
