Publisher's Summary

A perfect blend of medical drama and spiritual insight, Gray Matter is a fascinating account of Dr. David Levy's decision to begin asking his patients if he could pray for them before surgery. Some are thrilled. Some are skeptical. Some are hostile, and some are quite literally transformed by the request.

Each chapter focuses on a specific case, opening with a detailed description of the patient's diagnosis and the procedure that will need to be performed, followed by the prayer request. From there, listeners follow as Dr. Levy performs the operation, and then we wait - right alongside Dr. Levy, the patients, and their families - to see the final results.

Dr. Levy's musings on what successful and unsuccessful surgical results imply about God, faith, and the power of prayer are honest and insightful. As we see him come to his ultimate conclusion that, no matter what the results of the procedure are, "God is good," we cannot help but be truly moved and inspired.

Neurosurgical RN review

As an RN if over 40 years with ICU and Neurosurgery specialties at University if Iowa Hospitals and clinics, I was so impressed with this book! Never has a book captured the spiritual and physical power of behind the scenes! A must read, not too technical for a lay person, but just enough technicalities to empower a medical professional to be enraptured.

Hope Filled Surgery

Any additional comments?

Unashamedly Christian content.
Regardless of the outcome in surgery Dr. Levy is instrumental in offering hope to his patients.
A few may find it preachy as he spends some time on a Christian approach to dealing with unforgiveness and bitterness.
Gray Matter makes for engaging reading and is more than just a collection of surgical stories: this book details Dr Levy's own journey with faith and learning to trust God while he interacts with, prays over, and operates on his patients.

So much more than I expected!

I could've listened to this book in one sitting, it was so interesting. This man has taken his intelligence and skill and chose to use it to further the kingdom of God. The stories in this book do not always have the outcomes we would like, but that's real life. At times it's funny, at times heartbreaking, but always motivating and powerful. you don't have to be in the medical profession to relate to this book. these are common struggles that we all face in spreading the gospel. you will not be disappointed to buy this book.

I really liked this book!

I liked the interesting stories but mostly I liked hearing how he was able to overcome his hesitation to talk to people about spiritual things. He shared his struggles and they are the same ones I face, and I loved how he shared his patients issues, and how praying and sharing the love of Christ for them and His desire to forgive them and have a relationship with them, was a welcome help to most.
God is real and it's silly that we are afraid to talk about him with others. Especially since his heart is to hear from them. He really does love all of us and is waiting to hear.

Touching!

This book tugged at my heartstrings! As a nurse, I deal with the science of medicine, but also the emotional and spiritual journeys that my patients and their families have gone through! I really appreciated the humility that Dr. Levy shows in placing God in his work to guide him and help his patients and their families! Gid is always there in the care that I provide!

Great book for any Christian to read but especially perfectionists

I stumbled upon this accidentally ( or maybe it wasn’t as accidental as I think). God usually speaks to me loudest in medical contexts ( I am studying to be a chaplain). Anyway, I am glad I found this book. There is a lot of stuff in it I needed to hear right now. If perfectionism is holding you down I totally recommend this book.

Life Changing

It was not an accident that I stumbled upon this book...it was divine revelation! This book rekindled my faltering faith and gave me the courage to open up to my daughter about my doubts, and to pray to God in Jesus’ name for restoration and forgiveness. That’s true healing! Amen!

Loved it!

Written by a doctor who understands that we are whole beings, no part of our bodies stand alone.
What came through for me was humility, compassion and grace. Sadly we don't see too many doctors who care enough.

Attention grabbing

Very well narrated.
Even for me as a novice of the whole Neurology and it’s related issues this was really easy to get immersed in.
I throughly enjoyed every single story.
And the Author’s journey was so real.
Loved it, I didn’t want it to end.

Amazing

I felt very encouraged to not be too comfortable to separate my Christian life from my secular work. God is interested in all areas of our lives. He yearns for His glory to be seen in the lives of every day people.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book

Both a medical and spiritual text. To understand how faith and medicine work hand in hand from someone of Dr Levy’s standing is a privilege. It’s a great example for all of us on how we can use our gifts through our vocations to help others. The explanation of how to seek and also give forgiveness was particularly helpful. ThankYou!

Uplifting

I found this book to be eye opening, it's focus on the emotional and spiritual parts of health left me meditating a lot. The world needs more people with this prespective, not only surgeons, but teachers, politicians, policemen, etc

A wonderful example of how to use medicine as ministry

I recently graduated medical school and will be starting residency later this year. I’m a Christian and would like to be able to minister to patients through my medical practice and this book is a testament to the fact that faith and medicine do not have to be separate. It’s a must read for every Christian physician!!!

Interesting and honest

Dr Levy has not been afraid to share the struggles faced by every Christian when living their faith. The medical explanations of brain surgery procedures are respectfully presented for laymen. I found encouragement for my own Christian life and witnessing.

Lost me in the early chapters...

Perhaps I'm being unfair to the author, but I found myself getting increasingly annoyed at the seemingly repetitious references (to himself) being the most 'highly trained', 'highly skilled', 'rational man of science' etc. All of these are certainly true but are naturally deduced attributes of even your average neurosurgeon. I appreciate there may have been a point being made in this - that an outsider may be confused by an 'elite' member of society engaging in prayer - and maybe I just have a low tolerance for self reverence, but this was enough to put me off listening past the first recount of praying with a patient unfortunately.
