He overheard the story by chance in a pub and it’s guaranteed to go viral - all he needs to do is persuade the World’s Unluckiest Man to talk to him. His best friend Larry’s quest for killer clickbait material has led him to a recently appeared shanty town in Glasgow, where he finds some kind of urban voodoo cult. Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

Publisher's Summary
Police procedurals go supernatural in this gritty urban fantasy debut by Michael F. Haspil in Graveyard Shift.
Alex Menkaure, former pharaoh and mummy, and his vampire partner, Marcus, born in ancient Rome, are vice cops in a special Miami police unit. They fight to keep the streets safe from criminal vampires, shape-shifters, bootleg blood dealers, and anti-vampire vigilantes.
When poisoned artificial blood drives vampires to murder, the city threatens to tear itself apart. Only an unlikely alliance with former opponents can give Alex and Marcus a fighting chance against an ancient vampire conspiracy.
If they succeed, they'll be pariahs, hunted by everyone. If they fail, the result will be a race war bloodier than any the world has ever seen.

For some reason, the good episodes of Supernatural

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The book was very graphic all the way through.
Any additional comments?

Vampires and humans living in harmony?
Not quite!
This was a fun, easy listen police procedural with vampires, werewolves with a reincarnated mummy as the lead detective.
Lots of blood, gore, some gratuitous and graphic sex.
What was disappointing was the character development and back stories were lacking, just a taste of who these ancients were.
I hope the writer will continue the story and show us the history.
Excellent narration by Michael Kramer.

Over My Head
I'm sort of embarrassed to say this, but I got confused as to who was whom and what they were and what they said.
I love vampires, shape-shifters and urban fantasy is one of my absolute favorite genres. But I really got lost with these characters and what was happening. Not so great for urban fantasy that needs more grounding in urban in order for the fantasy part to work.
I found that reading the reviews made this book way more interesting and clear. I better understood the traits and background of the characters, as well as a better understanding of the plot.
One of the biggest reasons I got this book was because Michael Kramer is the narrator. I absolutely adored him from the Felix Castor series. But here, his wonderful sardonic quality was missing and instead was kind of muddled with undistinguishable accents.

I don't get it
This book is so disappointing, because the premise is there. It sounds like a winner, but it just isn't. This is the second credit I have wasted on a lame book in a matter of days. I am five hours in and I don't think I can take another five. It is just not worth my time.
First of all, there are scenes in this book that should be exciting, but they just aren't. The narrator is spotty, he does some voices well and some he doesn't at all. It is almost comical. I can't tell you how many times I had to rewind, cause the book just couldn't hold my attention and at this point - five hours in - I don't care about any of the characters. It is a mystery to me, where all these good reviews come from.
This is a no for me dawg, let's hope I am luckier in my next pick, as this is depressing.

Confusing
The story started out great. One could differentiate between characters. But later on it became more difficult when the two detectives were speaking. Then in the middle of somthing we ended up with a few other people where some of them sounded like one of the detectives.
I got a good deal on this. Perhaps I will give it another go. It is a good premise and started out great.

Excellent Story, the right blend of ingredients
It took me a while to pick up this book, because from listening to the sample, I knew it would be the beginning of a multi book series and did not want to wait for the next one. Thoroughly enjoyable story, which dips into several genres without becoming bogged down. Having the main character as a Mummy, was an interesting twist, given his strengths and limitations. The story also made me think of World of Darkness and Rage Worlds without becoming either, kudos to the author on that. I think the narrator was perfect for this story and hope he will be available for the next when it comes out (soon I hope).

I started of on this audio journey being unsure about the narrator but i think ive been spoiled by British Narrators, fair play to him he does bring you right into the story within the first hour.
From then i had to know what wsd happening next, my 60mins bedtime audio turned into 3 hours a night until the book was done.
