Andre Norton
Was Andas an android - or the rightful emperor, held prisoner on a distant planet while an android impersonated him on the empire's throne world? Was Tallhassee Mitford a modern archaeologist suffering from strange delusions, or has an ancient Egyptian ankh somehow hurled her personality far back in the mists of time to a Nubian kingdom where she is now a warrior princess named Ashake, caught up in a struggle between the gods of Egypt? Two very different heroes in the grip of forces beyond control, beyond comprehension, both destined to be the only hope of doomed civilizations....

The book itself was one of Norton's books from a period where the characters could be broke up into the cultures were broke into various alien and terran tinged culture. Andras, a young man who was in a prison which broke free as one of a number high prisons: a young ruler, one of the cat members and a trade group, a singer of a who is under pressure to sing a sea leader, a pair of criminals, and a politician. But there is possibility the characters might have been androids that have been created to take the place of the prisoners.
I don't know if my pleasure in the story is because of the nostalgia, but I wish that the narrator who be a better, more nuanced reader. I doubt if Andre Norton's are improved by slipshod reading.
The second novel mentioned from 1976 I don't even the heart to listen to any of it, is also painful.
