Gabriel has taken his first step to become the most powerful mage in the universe, but the path to his ultimate destiny has just begun. The next step to greatness for both he and his ragtag guild lay in their latest contract to recover a powerful magical artifact from across the desert. Now, he will have to harness new powers over the mind and magic to overcome dragons, gryphons, a fight club full of halflings, and the harebrained ideas of a sweet-but-ditzy alchemist just to reach their goal and the powerful rogue wizard who has it in his clutches.

Story
Cole is the most powerful witch to ever be born. Except, he’s a man, and there has never been a male witch. Now, Cole is stuck in the Devil’s Academy full of evil women who want to destroy him. To survive, he’ll have to perform a dark ritual that enslaves the beautiful witches to him. They’ll hate serving a man, of course, but that just makes the conquest over their bodies, minds, and souls that much sweeter.

Supervillains are murdering people in the streets, but yet superheroes are more concerned with gaining popularity than bringing the villains to justice. These villains think they are above the law and that nobody can stop them, but they never planned for me. I’ll murder every one of them with my powersuit, traps, and sidekicks. And if killing bad guys makes me a villain in the eyes of the heroes, well...I’ll destroy them too.

From book one: Being able to rip the soul out of a creature, store it in a precious gem, and use it to cast spells might make me the most powerful student at the Astra Argent Magical Academy. Only I can’t tell anybody about it. Because it's illegal, and they’ll kill me if they find out. But they need me whether they know it yet or not, so I’m going to capture a lot of souls and cast a lot of spells. This is gonna be a crazy semester. The old Cal couldn't handle this. But when I stumbled through the dream portal, I became something more. I'm no longer Cal Newhart, divorced college student and ex-marine. Now I'm the Paladin, a supernatural knight of legend.

Story
Have you ever felt like there was something inside of you pushing your actions? A dormant beast, so to speak. I know it sounds crazy. But, that’s the best way I could describe how I’ve felt for a long time. I thought it was normal, some animal part of the human brain that lingered from evolution. But, this is the story of how I learned I wasn’t exactly human, and there was a world underneath our own where all the things that go bump in the night live. And, that my beast was very real indeed.

I am giving a good review, however...
I liked the premise of the story. It felt a little short, but it did deliver the feeling it promised on the description. Narration was excellent to the point that I wasn't really even thinking about the narrators, as I usually do, but just enjoyed the story they were telling.
Somehow I do feel like something was lacking from the story. Maybe it's my preference on overpowered main characters, but it felt like the mc wasn't using his power nearly enough. I guess you could have different rules explaining this behaviour or saying some character attributes or personal failings with the mc caused this. I personally had a million different ideas on how he could use his power in the wilds or even just experiment with it.
I like the fact that the mc was written in a way that prevents him from showing of his powers too much, but I wish that when he can, he would be more... awesome(?). The title gave the feeling of an op caster, but so far the feeling I have of the mc is of an unimaginative confused kid who is just going with the motions and somehow has no idea how magic could maybe be used (no games, no fantasy books, no fantasy movies? where did this kid live?)
I like the archer, although her constant "anger" at things seems a bit unexplained. Hopefully further stories will expand on this more than just "she lost tom".
The biggest lost opportunity is that the healer seems an empty shell of a mary sue. Only existing to fill out the needs of the mc. No real devotion to gods is really shown in actions, only in words and she accepted easily the fact the her wish for help in the form of a mage came true, but then was surprised the god came to say hi. Also, why would the god care? The healer doesn't seem that devout... maybe in the next book we will learn.
I do enjoy the orc dude with two shield and the agenda of showing the world that orc can be kind and civilized by bashing peoples heads in with two shield! I do wish he also had more interesting things like fun hobbies such as poetry or knowledge of history or cooking or something fancy. Just to give him more character.
To summarize. It was good, but too short to make anything that happened matter to the reader. The book does not stand well alone and clearly needs more "episodes". It feels like the first part of a cheap tv series. I want to love it, but so far I just think it's good.
I am going to give the second book a chance. But with so many great books out there, some of which the same author wrote, "good" just doesn't cut it anymore.

Book unfortunately fell flat.
I have read and listened to other books by the author and have enjoyed them. However this book was very boring to me and had difficulty remaining interested. The narrator was great but he couldn’t bring me into this story. I will try book two to see if it improves though. This is my opinion only and I encourage others to decide for themselves.

Slow and predictable
The story is just so slow, bogged down in useless and repetitive information. By the time the story does move along, there isn’t really any anticipation left. A lot of the content and plot points and juvenile, things you expect from a Saturday morning cartoon or Kodomomuke. There are a few more mature moments but overall it’s a mixed bag.
I’m constantly thinking to my self “No duh” every time the MC has some genius thought. Definitely not a book you will think about later and need to reread to see if you missed somthing.
Narration was really great, some of the editing was a little off between the male and female voices causing overlap. Also, sometimes the tones of each voice didn’t match the tone of the overall conversation.

A good book but
Honestly I enjoy the book a lot, though I will admit I was/am debating on it being a 3 star.
I like the characters, the world sounds interesting though I think we need more details to flush it out. Same with the magic in like how there is healers, elemantists and a few other types though I hope each are explored a bit further.
I also hope the main character continues as is, he is powerful I just hope it doesn't to go to far.
my main issue really is how fast things developed, yes it's a shorter book which is fine. but how quickly some events happened felt a bit off. The reason i bumped it to four stars is because none of the events are to major this time so I felt it was a good starter book.
I look forward to continue listening to more of this series.

didn't hate this
once again I can feel the writer trying hard to create an epic but it feels like he hasn't thought out his magic system or over all world. that said it was fun and while our mc is a Maryssue the support characters are all fun and interesting the only thing I did dislike was this guy's voice. he didn't do it for me.

God of Magic
I Love this book I started collecting Logan Jacobs Arena books and I was hooked on the writers pulp fiction and his Characters. And this book is no different I will buy his audible books of this series a 10 in writing and story . Voices acting talents and skills of Rebecca Woods and Daniel Wisniewski I'm happy with there narration of this book. There bring more depth to the characters and world come alive I Love how we the tlistener and MC finds out more about this new world at the same time . So this book is a must to listen to and owned.
