Michael Coogan
An examination of sex and the Bible by one of the leading biblical scholars in the United States.
For several decades, Michael Coogan's introductory course on the Old Testament has been a perennial favorite among students at Harvard University. In God and Sex, Coogan examines one of the most controversial aspects of the Hebrew Scripture: What the Old Testament really says about sex, and how contemporary understanding of those writings is frequently misunderstood or misrepresented. In the engaging and witty voice generations of students have appreciated, Coogan explores the language and social world of the Bible, showing how much innuendo and euphemism is at play, and illuminating the sexuality of biblical figures as well as God. By doing so, Coogan reveals the immense gap between popular use of scripture and its original context. God and Sex is certain to provoke, entertain, and enlighten listeners.

If you are of the belief that the Bible is inerrant, this book will be a difficult read, but I implore you to keep an open mind, and remember that no one, including the author or the reader, has a complete understanding of God. Also keep in mind that the author and his colleagues are Christians themselves and have dedicated their lives to understanding the Bible.
If you are an atheist or agnostic, I think you would greatly enjoy this book, because it bridges the gap between the extreme conservative views and academia.
I hope you enjoy this book regardless of your worldview. In order to do so, you must keep an open mind an open heart, not assuming you know everything and eager to learn and grow.
Modern Christian Perspective

He just presented a passage on divorce as confusing, and it was when we was talking about it, but 30 seconds on biblehub cleared it up.
He also accuses "Rabbi Jesus" of sighting irrelevant verse, but as a Christian (LDS) I'll take the interpretation of Christ Jesus.
In many other places he stretches, twists, and obfuscates what is plainly manifest in the word of God.
I may or may not finish the book.
pseudo scholarship and no spirit

Guess what, Dr. Coogan, yes "feet" in ancient Israel could have been a reference to sexual organs, but guess what??? Feet can also mean feet!!!! What a revelation. Dying at someone's feet (Judges 5:25-27) doesn't mean that the person was killed while having sex! Yes, listener, this is the kind of laughable foolishness you will hear in this book.
This book was mistitled, a bait and switch. Instead of hearing what the Bible says about sex, I get to listen to a Bible-denier try to use the Bible to justify sin.
I implore fellow Christians NOT to waste your money or credits on this tripe. I want my credit back!!
foolishness

He also spends a lot of time trying to convince you that God is not what you have been led to believe with various jabs here and there.. Calling God a "night demon" where he references passages incorrectly, like Exodus 4:24, where God is speaking about killing Pharaoh's first born and how he met pharaoh 'by the way in the inn', but Michael here misreads it to say it was God coming after Moses to kill Moses.. If it was suppose to be Moses, the text would have shown a common technique of switching topic such as "And it came to pass". No, Michael of course can't resist twisting the scripture to fit some narrative of God being a night demon even coming after his own servants.. Is this suppose to be scholarship? LOL, what a joke.
He also goes in and tries to say biological designation is a cultural declaration. Something that is rather new and a fad of the current progressive left, where they deny science, while claiming to be scientific. I am sure that will bode well for Michael in the future, when long after he is dead, many other scholars see this as hilarious buffoonery. . I guess chromosomes are sexist or something..
I was hoping instead he would deal with the obvious anti-sex theme within Christendom, without having to put his own biases on other topics into the mix. But I guess even Harvard scholars can't resist.
Would have been better if he would have taken an approach more like Dr Anne Nyland, a Greek Scholar, who has translated the New Testament with linguistic scholarship based of new archaeological finds, which have shed light on the meanings of words.
I was hoping he would talk about sex & the Bible
