An examination of sex and the Bible by one of the leading biblical scholars in the United States.

For several decades, Michael Coogan's introductory course on the Old Testament has been a perennial favorite among students at Harvard University. In God and Sex, Coogan examines one of the most controversial aspects of the Hebrew Scripture: What the Old Testament really says about sex, and how contemporary understanding of those writings is frequently misunderstood or misrepresented. In the engaging and witty voice generations of students have appreciated, Coogan explores the language and social world of the Bible, showing how much innuendo and euphemism is at play, and illuminating the sexuality of biblical figures as well as God. By doing so, Coogan reveals the immense gap between popular use of scripture and its original context. God and Sex is certain to provoke, entertain, and enlighten listeners.

As a Christian myself, I found this book extremely interesting and insightful.

If you are of the belief that the Bible is inerrant, this book will be a difficult read, but I implore you to keep an open mind, and remember that no one, including the author or the reader, has a complete understanding of God. Also keep in mind that the author and his colleagues are Christians themselves and have dedicated their lives to understanding the Bible.

If you are an atheist or agnostic, I think you would greatly enjoy this book, because it bridges the gap between the extreme conservative views and academia.

I hope you enjoy this book regardless of your worldview. In order to do so, you must keep an open mind an open heart, not assuming you know everything and eager to learn and grow.

Modern Christian Perspective

He tries to present a balanced and analytical view of what the scriptures actually say, or so he claims.
He just presented a passage on divorce as confusing, and it was when we was talking about it, but 30 seconds on biblehub cleared it up.
He also accuses "Rabbi Jesus" of sighting irrelevant verse, but as a Christian (LDS) I'll take the interpretation of Christ Jesus.
In many other places he stretches, twists, and obfuscates what is plainly manifest in the word of God.
I may or may not finish the book.

What would have made God and Sex better?

Nothing the book is a scam

Would you ever listen to anything by Michael Coogan again?

Never, if this is the what he writes like, then he is a scammer after peoples money

What didn’t you like about Michael Coogan’s performance?

the whole book had nothing in it. He couldnt back anything up with real christian ethics

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from God and Sex?

The whole book wants to be scrapped

Any additional comments?

For anyone considering this book just based on the title, DONT GET TAKEN IT BY IT.

Pathetic, no real content, dont waste your time

It is obvious that you haven't meet, my Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ. I believe the bible was written by men inspired by the holy spirit of God. Went i let Jesus into my heart ,and let Him guide me in all things ,thank God for His forgivens, of all sins no big or small ,just sin, He forgives all of you just ask. Yes I fell many times, but he never leaves me , we are to love one another,

My feelings

One of the first things he says is that the Bible is not God's Word, so it is dishonest for him to call his book "God and Sex." Secondly, he looks for sexual innuendo in the Bible where there is none to try to prove his points.

Guess what, Dr. Coogan, yes "feet" in ancient Israel could have been a reference to sexual organs, but guess what??? Feet can also mean feet!!!! What a revelation. Dying at someone's feet (Judges 5:25-27) doesn't mean that the person was killed while having sex! Yes, listener, this is the kind of laughable foolishness you will hear in this book.

This book was mistitled, a bait and switch. Instead of hearing what the Bible says about sex, I get to listen to a Bible-denier try to use the Bible to justify sin.

I implore fellow Christians NOT to waste your money or credits on this tripe. I want my credit back!!
