A luxurious and richly compelling new novel from the bestselling author of Blush, about a famous family jewelry dynasty and the hidden past that could topple it all.

One perfect diamond is all it takes to divide a family. Could one summer be enough to fix it?

The Pavlin family built an empire on love. As the first jewelers to sell diamond engagement rings, they started a tradition that has defined the industry ever since. But when an ill-fated publicity stunt pits the three Pavlin sisters against one another for a famous family jewel, their bond is broken. No ordinary diamond ring, the Electric Rose splinters the sisters, leaving one unlucky in love, one escaping to the shores of Cape Cod, and the other, ultimately, dead.

Now, more than a decade later, the only Pavlin granddaughter, Gemma Maybrook, is still reconciling the reality of her mother's death. Left orphaned and cast out by her family after the tragic accident, Gemma is ready to reclaim what should have been hers: the Electric Rose. And, as a budding jewelry designer in her own right, Gemma isn't just planning on recovering her mother's lost memento, she's coming back for everything.

From Manhattan’s tony Fifth Avenue to the vibrant sands of Provincetown, Gilt follows the Pavlin women as they are forced to confront the mistakes of the past if they have any hope of finding love and happiness of their own.©2022 Jamie Brenner (P)2022 Penguin Audio

I enjoyed this book. The narrator made it easy to listen to. The storyline kept my interest and made me want to find out what happened to the characters. This story had drama, mystery and romance.

Enjoyed

While this book was entertaining, it became much better with January LaVoy as the reader.

Great story, easy listen

I enjoyed this book a lot (not as much as I loved Ms. Brenner’s book, “Blush,”), but it was still an easy, interesting, engaging read.

I loved that the majority of the story took place near Cape Cod. Every time the setting was mentioned, it sounded so beautiful, I wanted to pack my suitcase and go for a long stay there.😊

The characters were all well-developed and interesting. The main character, Gemma…I had mixed feelings at times about her. She is a very talented jewelry designer/maker, but with all her talent, was still insecure personally. I really wanted to tell her to stop being so stupid about men — especially in regard to “Connor.”

Elodie, another main character is a hard-driven businesswoman, in charge of the family’s huge jewelry conglomerate. Initially she was very hard, sharp and deceitful. She lied and cheated her own family as a means to an end. I liked her character more towards the end of the book than at the beginning. Elodie saw the error of her ways and she made amends as best she could. Love (romantic love) worked wonders in softening her heart.

The third important character was Celeste, Elodie’s sister. She’s the exact opposite of Elodie. She’s free-spirited and wants nothing to do with the family company or the piece of jewelry that’s the focus of the story — The Electric Rose. While I liked this character very much, if someone told me they “couldn’t sign any business contracts for 23 days until the planets were out of retrograde,” I’d think they needed some professional help.

Celeste was another character I wanted to tell to stop being stupid when it came to men. She and her partner, Jack were together for many years and ran a successful antique business together. Jack ADORES Celeste and after all their years together, he wants to make it “official” by getting married.

Most single women I know would give anything to find a guy like Jack — hardworking, sensitive, good-looking and who completely adores them, but ding-batty Celeste puts Jack off for years, finally agrees to get married and then backs out of their wedding at the last second, because she just wasn’t sure marriage was for her or that their marriage would work. WHAT wouldn’t work? They were already living their lives as if they were married. Sometimes this character just annoyed me with her wishy-washy ways and her “ding-batty-ness.”

Despite the drama and hurt feelings between the two sisters (Elodie and Celeste), and their niece (Gemma), they eventually, each in their own way, came to realize how important family, and whether they wanted to admit it or not, they needed each other. They recognized the need to put old hurts aside and to let go of grudges (they ALL had grudges).

The narrator, January LaVoy, did a fantastic job! Ms. LaVoy gave each character their individual voice and personality and really made the characters interesting and realistic.

Overall, I enjoyed this book enough to buy another by this author.

January LaVoy is a wonderful storyteller, and the story itself was intriguing. I always like a story about women who run their own business. The characters were likable and relatable, but for me, the whole book was too character-driven. There was not enough plot or suspense, or whatever it is that keeps the reader turning pages to see what happens next.

Gotta Love January LaVoy!
