Story
The holidays are upon us, and this year Audible is very happy to present to our members one of Charles Dickens’ most popular Christmas stories, The Cricket on the Hearth. This holiday classic (original subtitle: “A Fairy Tale of Home”) tells the innocent, picturesque, and charming story of a poor family and their would-be guardian angel; in short, a delightful vision of Victorian Christmas. As always, a great story calls for a great voice, so we’ve brought in legendary actor and record-breaking Audie and Grammy award-winning narrator Jim Dale ( The Night Circus). Happy holidays and happy listening!

Aidan and Sarah Cooper have no idea what they’re getting into one afternoon when they discover a mysterious coded document in a secret compartment of an antique English desk their father recently bought at an auction. Something about the document seems familiar to Sarah, and that night she realizes what it is: the document seems to be referring to some books she has read - the Starcatchers series, about the origin of Peter Pan. But how could that be? The document seems far older than the books. And of course, the books are just stories....

Story
A fantastical novel, a wildly inventive tale—by turns poignant and funny, lusty and wrenching—about love and heartbreak. Edinburgh, 1874: Born with a frozen heart, Jack is nearly dead when his mother abandons him to the care of Dr. Madeleine—witch doctor, midwife, protector of orphans—who saves Jack by placing a cuckoo clock in his chest. It is in her orphanage that Jack grows up, amid tear-filled flasks, eggs containing memories, a man with a musical spine.

Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Publisher's Summary
From Newbery Medalist Susan Cooper, a story of adventure and friendship between a young Native American and a colonial New England settler.
On the winter day Little Hawk is sent into the woods alone, he can take only a bow and arrows, his handcrafted tomahawk, and the amazing metal knife his father traded for with the new white settlers. If Little Hawk survives three moons by himself, he will be a man.
John Wakely is only 10 when his father dies, but he has already experienced the warmth and friendship of the nearby tribes. Yet his fellow colonists aren't as accepting of the native people. When he is apprenticed to a barrel-maker, John sees how quickly the relationships between settlers and natives are deteriorating. His friendship with Little Hawk will put both boys in grave danger.
The intertwining stories of Little Hawk and John Wakely are a fascinating tale of friendship and an eye-opening look at the history of our nation. Newbery Medalist Susan Cooper also includes a timeline and an author's note that discusses the historical context of this important and moving novel.

Excellent at so many levels
I can't say enough about this book. Jim Dale may be one of the best readers ever. The story pulls you in. Over time you realize that the historical fiction is incredibly true, sad and the story needs to be told.

I didn't know what to expect when I downloaded this particular but I was blown away by all of the feels. Jim Dale is an outstanding narrator incredibly talented and never disappoints. this is a story of a young Indian boy who grows into a man who turns into a spirit... then it is of a young white man who has tried to vouch for his young Indian friend and later turns into a man he wants to fight to protect all Indians. this is a story all American should read. this is a story all humans should know.

Wonderful book!
This was a wonderful book yet sad in that it shows the cruelty of the white settlers towards the Native Americans. This is the story of so many peoples who are misunderstood and who are mistreated because others want what they have. The story is well written and, as always, Jim Dale did a superb narration.

Fine Historical Novel
Although classified as YA - Young Adult - this is a thoughtful, sometimes painful story filled to the brim with detailed descriptions of daily life among the local Native Americans and the early settlers. It also describes socioeconomic realities like the apprenticeship program and New-World religious persecution. It peels away some of our most pervasive myths - noble Squanto, for example. Highly recommended for ages 10+.
