Publisher's Summary

The EMP hits. The lights go out and silence roars. Society is on the brink of violent chaos. The only way to survive is to get out, away from the cities and into the wilderness.

Max is an office worker with some gear and a plan. He's one of the first to realize the unspoken dangers. A few years ago, he inherited an old farmhouse. His plan is to get to it as fast as possible and bunker down. He thinks he's ready, but he quickly discovers that there's more to surviving than just having the right gear.

Mandy is a waitress with the day off work. What seems like a normal power outage quickly turns terrifying. Her peaceful town is no longer the home she once knew. She's offered a way out, but can she put her trust in a perfect stranger?

Georgia is a single mother who just wants to keep his two teenage kids safe. She drives a pickup and loves hunting. She has skills that could keep her family alive, but is she ready to make life or death decisions in the blink of an eye?

Do Max, Mandy, and Georgia have what it takes to overcome the unexpected? After all, even the best-laid plans can come up short.

The story evolved too quickly

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The main character knew seconds after the power went out that it was an EMP, never checked to see if cellular phones were down, generators failed to start, etc... He just knew. I would prefer the story unfold a little more realistically. Trucks with guns mounted in the bed moments after the power went out? Where did those trucks come from so quickly? Not in our US inventory that I am aware. Police cars won’t work after an EMP, way too many electronics. Sorry Ryan, I wish you slowed down with the story a little. Don’t rush into it. Let it develope. There is so much potential with this story.

Good story re systems crashing - will listen again

Enjoyed the good examples and bad examples with consequences for either behaviors, mother trying to steal two different times with bad consequences, Max a good example - while you cannot help everyone, you can help some; Max thought he was prepared but realized he could have done more. The need to avoid strangers whose motives you do not know. Two suicidal people - Norma and Jeremy - they could have survived but gave up - NEVER GIVE UP. Jeremy's bad example of his life course - futility of pursuit of money- Norma's pursuit of fun, foolish, aimless life goals. Drug addict Chad useless until he made up his mind to be productive.

Good examples of when the crash occurs, need to act decisively - Max leaving work ignoring his boss' threats and the mother gathering her children from school ignoring
the teachers. FOCUS very good.

Please, please, please do a sequel to this book. I want to see how the small group of Max, Mandy and the others go about sustaining themselves. Practical examples of unselfishness, hard work, cooperation, planning and follow through.

NOPE, soap opera'ish stupidity going back

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I would have kept listening if I could of stopped rolling my eyes and the story wasn't like a script for a really bad afternoon Lifetime Channel Movie. I was driving and just needed something to listen to, it was so bad I stopped and downloaded another book. Just a really dumb story with so many flaws, not just technical flaws, I cant even begin to list them all; here's a couple: Drunk rapists (DRIVING) to, and kicking in the doors of, an apartment 2 1/2 minutes after the power went out? All electronics out, except for all the vehicles people were DRIVING? Neighbors stealing from neighbors 3 1/2 minutes after the power went out before DRIVING away? Dumb "country folk" convinced the country was attacked by the Chinese or Russians 4 1/2 minutes after the power went out? The same "stupid" country folk abducting and abusing people 5 1/2 minutes after the power went out, then being outsmarted by stupid people and the stupid people who were abused feeling sorry for the other stupid people because someone needed something? (I pulled over at this point to find another story). The author should have listened to one EMP based story before writing this. I've listened to Kevin Pierce before. I do not get his style of narration, but when he has a good story to work with I can listen. I'm not sure, but if my review up to this point hasn't laid it out, this was not a good story.

Humble opinion

Really hard to keep going, the story looked promising at first, but as I kept listening, it went down hill, events kept dragging on and on, on random unnecessary plots, felt like the author was trying to prolong the book size with poor quality content. Certainly didn’t lived up to the star rating, or Kevin Pierce’s performance.

C grade book

Story all over place. Needed more details and specifics. Plus the Jeremy story part, car accident, and Russian Spies didn't make sense.

great narration, bad bad story

could only make it through a few chapters,. characters do nonsensical things, society falls apart way to fast, not well written at all, I'll be returning this one. Kevin Pierce is a fantastic narrator,. don't know why he would read this terrible book.

good but...

I enjoyed the story. As I do most books in this genre, that being said it felt rushed. Considering the realities of the situation, I understand the authors reasoning. Though, the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more, before the melt down. It would have allowed the harshness of their experiences to be more impactful. I will be listening/reading the next in the series and hope for character building!

Good story line but...

Some obvious continuity problems. Somewhat unrealistic situations. Also this author is obsessed with girls bodies 😕

Fairly shallow story

Not bad but nothing special or out of the ordinary. Just a standard apocalypse story
