John's talent for storytelling enchants his audience as it soaks up the lessons he learned during his often challenging voyages. Now you can take a seat next to John - at a lesser cost - and get the knowledge you need to fulfill your own dream of blue-water adventure.

Story
When COVID-19 struck the UK, the government advised the over-70s to "shield" while the country went into lockdown. One old man went sailing instead. Single-handed and self-isolated, retired journalist John Passmore used the pandemic to achieve an ambition that had eluded him for 60 years. For 3,629 miles, he disappeared into a world of perfect solitude, adventure, and adversity, arriving back 42 days later, short of water and with shredded sails, to find himself celebrated on national radio as the embodiment of everybody’s lockdown dream. This is his story.

"The tale of Carl Wake and the hurricane that was waiting for him goes straight to the heart of the greatest sea stories: they are not about man against the sea, but man against himself. John Kretschmer's audiobook is as perfectly shaped and flawlessly written as such a story can be. In addition to being the best depiction I have ever listened to of what it is like to be inside a hurricane at sea, At the Mercy of the Sea is as moving a story of a man's failure and redemption as can be found anywhere in the literature of the sea. This audiobook is surely destined to become a classic."

What happens when a man of today's overconnected world sets off alone across the Pacific at the age of 71? Christian Williams, a veteran sailor and writer, planned a 6,000-mile voyage as a test of his own seamanship and endurance, and to fulfill a lifelong goal. But he found his focus quickly turning from the surrounding sea to all of us. Is anyone the same person when no one else is there? Do we dare to find out?

John Kretschmer is sailing’s practical philosopher - as much a doer as a thinker. And that is the overarching theme of this chronicle of a sailing life. Often amusing, sometimes poignant, occasionally terrifying but always inspiring, his deeply personal account is a welcome reminder of the good life waiting at sea. With hundreds of thousands of nautical miles under his keel, John’s adventures have taken him several times around the world.

Publisher's Summary
The idea that you have to be rich to travel the world on your own yacht is so universal that it goes largely unquestioned. The ubiquitous images of rich men on super-yachts sipping Martinis only help cement this image. This book hopes to change all that.
Rick's recent appearance on Ben Fogle's New Lives in the Wild chronicled his budget lifestyle and adventures aboard Calypso, and introduced the idea of budget sailing to a whole new audience - an audience who may have never considered the possibility that such a dream could be made a reality, on such a small amount of money. This book is for them and for any experienced sailors who want to cast off the yoke of consumerist yachting and get back to what really matters at sea.
If you are not rich, but dream of seeing our beautiful world from the deck of your own boat, this book is packed full of practical and spiritual advice to help you cut through the endless marketing and identify what it is you truly need to become a modern sea gypsy and sail away on the greatest adventure of your life...

Fantastic perspective on the sea gypsy life! yeah it is not a book to teach you how to sail, doesn't claim to, and those who get but hurt foe being called out on their "american" mass consumption and capitalist life styles are the exact opposite of any gypsy let alone a sea gypsy. So yeah take this book for what it is and enjoy. Some great stories, and good tips, well written and entertaining.

Great book!
I stumbled across this book a few months ago while researching Island Packet sailboats cruising. Rick's current boat popped him and this book into my Google search.
This book has given me much to think about as I begin my journey toward "getting gone". I found the writing style very entertaining and the information and underlying philosophy spot on for the type of lifestyle I would like to live.
I'm sure it isn't every sailors cup of tea, and Rick's advice may challenge or even offend some, but come on, couldn't we all stand to have some ideas and assumptions challenged once in a while?
Give the book a read or a listen if you like the idea of sailing off to wherever and you don't have a huge budget. It could be possible and the info in this book could help. I just picked up his follow up book "Stay Real and Stay Gone" and think you should too.

Igenerally don't leave reviews but, as my wife and I are starting our journey into live aboard sailing, this was one of the best books I've picked up out there. Rick puts into words what i have suspected but I haven't heard anyone else say. this book is about the mindset you need to try and make this transition and gives great technical advice too. it is absolutely wonderful and cheeky in all the right ways while cutting through bullshit. 10 out of 10 would recommend !

Great Perspective - Rational, Sustainable Sailing
My favorite thing about this book was that it told me I needed to do a bunch of things I am already doing. Who doesn't like it when someone supports their ideas? That being said, Rick is WAY farther along in this process than I am and listening to his philosophy and process is both exciting and informative. The book is written to present a really holistic and comprehensive view of what it takes to leave land and transition to a simple sustainable sailing lifestyle. It leaves room for your own modifications with only a few "rules" that Rick considers unbreakable. The last, best thing I'll mention about Get Real, Get Gone is that Rick is not joking when he tells you to get in touch with him if you have any questions or want clarification. He will literally email you back once he has time and an internet connection. How many books can you say that about?

Excellent book - very helpful
You can tell this is written by a level headed individual who is being realistic with things (combined with his experience). Instead of making broad-sweeping generalities without actually getting to the heart of matters, it is refreshing to get some solid information on a topic that can be hard to even scratch the surface on. The target audience is the vast majority of the population instead of the storybook fantasyland image of the stock broker traders sailing off into the sunset on a 80 foot catamaran with two dozen playgirls. That's not even sailing, ladies and gentlemen, and the title points to right to it: Get Real, Get Gone.

Temptation Temptation
The life portrayed in this book is like a box of chocolates; very very tempting.
Rich has amazing knowhow and years of experience of low budget blue water sailing and he’s happy to share this with his audience. He makes the life of a Sea Gypsy sound extremely attractive.
There’s a lot to be said for the lifestyle and as a life long adventurer i know I’ll be out there myself once my youngest has flown the nest.
Rick makes it all sound so doable and affordable. His book is full of sensible and practical advice which I’ll be referring to. I’d never heard of Rick before but will be following him on his adventures from now on !

Must have read if thinking of living life afloat!
This book is a real eye-opener to starting your life on the sea on a sensible budget, simply it’s a bible for anyone thinking of starting a new life afloat and leaving land behind! But not only that it’s just full of useful information that Cleary Rick had to collate and share with us, what a kind chap!
I loved listening to this book in fact I have listened to it four times to date. As it helps me to plan and realise the dream and hopefully make it a reality, the book also gets inside the mind of a sea gipsy in this case Rick and shares how relationship dynamics work or won’t work possibly, I never looked at this way before! I assumed my partner would want to come but when I look at my goals and hers that might not be the case and I might have to start to make alternate plans. This book has been invaluable to me and Rick replies to my emails and we chat a little as well very helpful chap all around!
Thanks, Rick

Annoying Sing-Song, Tense Reader‘s Voice
This is a great book for sailors interested in the cruising life. Unfortunately the reader has chosen to use far too much inflection as well as far too large a pitch range in his voice. He constantly injects a sense of urgency as a result. It is impossible to relax listening to this type of reading. This is a great pity.
