Genomics has transformed the biological sciences. From epidemiology and medicine to evolution and forensics, the ability to determine an organism's complete genetic makeup has changed the way science is done and the questions that can be asked of it. Its most celebrated achievement was the Human Genome Project, a technologically challenging endeavor that took thousands of scientists around the world 13 years and over three billion US dollars to complete.

In this Very Short Introduction, John Archibald explores the science of genomics and its rapidly expanding toolbox. Sequencing a human genome now takes only a few days and costs as little as $1,000. The genomes of simple bacteria and viruses can be sequenced in a matter of hours on a device that fits in the palm of your hand. The resulting sequences can be used to better understand our biology in health and disease and to "personalize" medicine. Archibald tells us how the field of genomics is on the cusp of another quantum leap; the implications for science and society are profound.

Strikes a perfect balance in the level of detail presented, and framing the developments in a historical context. For a PhD in a related life science field who hadn't had the time to be up to date on all the details in genomics, it was 100% well used time listening to this.

Excellent overview

it was alright. some parts are more technical, but overall it is tolerable for an audiobook. considerung this is a very short introduction, this is enough amount

listening to this audiobook made me realize how little I knew about the field of genomics. much of the book focuses on the techniques of Gene analysis and the rapid evolution of that field.

a great overview of genomics

I am participating on some research with other researchers in genomics and was completely unfamiliar with the genomics aspects. (Not my area of expertise.)

This audio book was able to bring me up to speed on the essentials so that I could understand what they were trying to accomplish (on a basic level) and how I could use my skillset to aid them.

I am no expert in genomics and this book won't drill into the technical details to make you one, but it is an excellent starting point to simply understand.

The narrating is clear, the writing concise and meaningful.
