Garvey's father has always wanted Garvey to be athletic, but Garvey is interested in astronomy, science fiction, reading - anything but sports. Feeling like a failure, he comforts himself with food. Garvey is kind, funny, smart, a loyal friend, and he is also overweight, teased by bullies, and lonely. When his only friend encourages him to join the school chorus, Garvey's life changes. The chorus finds a new soloist in Garvey, and through chorus Garvey finds a way to accept himself and a way to finally reach his distant father - by speaking the language of music instead of the language of sports. This emotionally resonant novel in verse by award-winning author Nikki Grimes celebrates choosing to be true to yourself.

I just finished this book and I am 54 years old. I listened to it on Audible while on a hike. Hearing poetry out loud is always a great thing, particularly with a skilled voice actor. It only took a few pages for me to fall into the rhythm of Garvey‘s voice. There were so many deep themes to chew on, and the way the author spun her phrases and words was like candy to my mind. This is my kind of poetry, narrative poetry, where I can turn the pages fast. And I did. I thought the plot was full of surprises, and found the ending very satisfying. The author even made a place for me to shed a few tears. This is one of those books that is great for Homeschool teachers to use as a fun way to teach her student about literary devices and poetry. I’m going to be using it with my seventh grade son. But I also enjoyed the language in the story so much myself, it’s inspired me to try writing a novel in verse. I appreciate the diversity of the story, of both Garvey and his friends in the story, which include black children, and an albino student, and also different styles of intelligence. (Athletic vs musical vs logic). I can see why this book is a teacher’s pic. The length of the story was just right and can be finished in one sitting. After listening to it on Audible, I purchased two paper copies to annotate with my son.

So good, I ordered two paper copies as well!
