Eleven-year-old Elijah is the first child born into freedom in Buxton, Canada, a settlement of runaway slaves just over the border from Detroit. He’s best known in his hometown as the boy who made a memorable impression on Frederick Douglass. But things change when a former slave steals money from Elijah’s friend, who has been saving to buy his family out of captivity in the South. Elijah embarks on a dangerous journey to America in pursuit of the thief, and he discovers firsthand the unimaginable horrors of the life his parents fled–a life from which he’ll always be free, if he can find the courage to get back home.©2007 Christopher Paul Curtis; (P)2008 Random House, Inc. The story itself is phenomenal and the narration is perfect. My only issue is with how the chapters are labeled vs. the actual chapters. For example, the audio that is labeled as Chapter 1 encompasses from Chapter 1 in the book to the middle of Chapter 3. The audio that is labeled Chapter 2 encompasses from the middle of Chapter 3 in the book to the end of Chapter 6. I use audiobooks for my students with disabilities who need audio support. This labeling makes it very difficult for them.

Great book/narration; terrible chapter labeling

It was amazing. All I think it needs is a huge bowl of popcorn and a movie about it.

How is this so good.

I read Elijah of Buxton last year and just adored the story and history of Buxton. I was very pleased when we found the audio version - the narrator is very animated and entertaining.

Great story - great narration - a win - win

I never finished reading g the book so when I found the audible version I was extremely excited. I finished it in 2 days.

I love the story. I teared up quite often listening to the story. I feel so lucky I was not born back in those days. I often think of the slaves that were born and died as a slave. never seeing a day of freedom. Their whole life they were mistreated and that's all they knew. All of this just because of the color of their skin. it just doesn't make since.

Excellent audible book.

I loved this book

Incredible story and outstanding narration. I highly recommend this book to everyone. We listened to it as part of our homeschool history class and it was perfect for our study of the Civil War era. The depiction of slavery is painfully realistic but won't be traumatic for young listeners. I am so impressed with the way the author handled this difficult subject matter.

incredible

The story and performance are great. I would recommend this to everyone. The chapters are not accurate on the cloud player, so make sure to mark your times down on a sticky note. Other than that, pure joy!

Elijah is Honest

The narration by Mirron Willis is outstanding. The story was captivating, and is a bittersweet story of the sorrow and joy of freedom from slavery. Listened with my 13 year old who enjoyed it as well.

Wonderful

Great story! I use this book in my 7th grade classes and it’s a great listen. The story helps students understand slavery more but the performance is phenomenal too!

Great!
