Publisher's summary

Nineteen-year-old NiNi Alexander can be full of smiles, but unbeknownst to anyone, she's broken on the inside. Being an only child, her cousin Onyae is the closest thing she has to a sister.

Onyae is young, wild, and free. Her boldness and beauty make her stand out from most. She knows all the pain that her cousin endures, and she tries to help her through it, but her sisterly love doesn't seem to be enough.

Because NiNi's mother is laden with illness, NiNi has dedicated her life to caring for her. While NiNi is happy to do it, it prevents her from living her life. Because she doesn't have a job, she depends on funds from her stepfather, but that comes with a price.

While dealing with the challenges she has in her home, she meets and falls for a man named Rayshon. With his looks alone, he can make any woman fall for him. NiNi never imagined that a guy like Rayshon existed, and she definitely never thought he'd want her. With her cousin in her ear, she cautiously gives love a try.

As she battles with low self-esteem, an ill mother, and a man that has a lot of baggage, will love conquer all? Or, will NiNi lose to a battle called life?

My heart breaks

I almost could not finish this book. Not because it wasn’t great, because it was. This book had so much emotional strife that it hit my heart every time I came to a part where the abuse happens. My heart goes out for the little girl who endures abuse because she feels no one will listen. My heart goes out to the little girl whose life is fast forwarded because they feel it’s what they “have to do”. I cried so hard listening to this. I laughed so hard listening to this. I got MADDDDDD listening to this. I almost couldn’t finish because my emotions through this listen was INTENSE. This happens everyday. There is physical, mental, verbal, and financial abuse in black families EVERYDAY and no one speaks up, out of fear or judgement! Listen and pay attention to your children. They reach out for help! Do not ignore the signs! This book was so heartbreaking! I screamed at the characters like they could hear me! I yelled at Onyae for keeping her cousin’s secret fuck a promise! I got so mad at Neosha for not paying attention to her child sick or not. I wanted to Beat the Fuck out of Damon’s nasty pedophile ass! No I wanted to KILL him. This book took me on an emotional roller coaster that I couldn’t get off of until the ending. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR KIDS MAN! THE SIGNS THAT SOMEONE IS HURTING THEM, THE NOT WANTING TO BE AROUND THAT PERSON, THE UNEXPLAINED ANGER, THE ALWAYS LASHING OUT. Man where is book 2?!?

wow

I'm in awe of those book. I was so mad at some these characters. I literally wanted to go in the back and slap the mess out of them. My heart was breaking in some parts. This is a very emotional book and you need to go in reading all warnings of abuse triggers. With that being said the book is a five star and A-1 narration.

not my normal listen, but fantastic narrator

this is not my normal kind of story that I listen to, so I don't really know if the story is typically good or bad for its genre. it was okay. but give credit where it's due this narrator was phenomenal. I will keep her on my radar.

Smh!!!

Hood story, but realistic. Sad case 😞 which is often the truth in some families. Looking forward to part II.

Good...very sensative subject matter

This is a very good book. However, the subject matter is a lot to take. The narration was great and I will definitely read or listen to part 2.

very good

I enjoyed this book because it was a step away the normal gangsta love story. it also hits on the trauma some people experience as a child and seeing the signs I enjoy this book and can't wait for the second book.
