Publisher's Summary

When Gail Zigman, town selectwoman and Joe Gunther's companion of many years, is raped, Gunther finds himself caught between the media, local politicians, and a network of well-meaning victims' rights advocates as he tries to put his own feelings aside and follow a trail of evidence. Every lead points to a single obvious suspect, but is the evidence too perfect?

Risking his friendship with Gail, the respect of his peers, and his own life, Lieutenant Gunther keeps digging, hoping to find out if the man they have in jail is rightly there or if the evidence against him is tainted - what police call "fruits of the poisonous tree".

Best One Yet😀

The author tackles a very poignant subject with Thought-provoking Tenderness and Respect. He brings his characters along a tricky path that educates the reader to a degree as the characters grapple with situations. The author thoughtfully showed Many facets of the subject that are oftentimes neglected, or presented to a lesser degree than the main focus is traditionally shown(particularly Joe's point of view.. and also that of other secondary characters)

On a personal note, I found myself having to pause from time to time to digest the information... sometimes drying tears.
So far, my Favorite in the Series 😀

My new "favorite" mystery series!

Where does Fruits of the Poisonous Tree rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've been looking for over a year for a "new" mystery series and finally I have found Archer Mayor's Joe Gunther series. I love the Joe Gunther character as well as the stories. So many mystery series are outlandish or horrific things are added in for ""shock" value. The Joe Gunther books are just great mystery stories.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Mayor's stories always have a great plot twist near the end and this one does not disappoint. I've listened to five Joe Gunther books in a row and I have not been disappointed by a single one. This story was particularly "edgy" because I care about the characters of Joe and Gail and I worried how they would move on together after the rape. The "frame" of the wrong man and Joe's determination to get to the truth definitely kept me reading / listening.

Which character – as performed by Tom Taylorson – was your favorite?

For me, Tom Taylorson is the voice of Joe Gunther. His voice is Joe's voice. I have never liked it when narrators change in a series.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

No movie could do justice to this story!

Any additional comments?

I'm so happy I found this new mystery series and that I can share it with my mom who is also enjoying it.

Gunther is incompetent in this

Normally I like Archer Mayor but this one was a POS. Unbelievable. Characters can’t be this incompetent all the time.

Gail and Joe’s journey

This is one of the best Joe Gunther books I have listened to yet, and I have listened to a lot of them back to back. This is the only one that doesn’t include a dead body, but it brings up rape and what it can do to a woman and those that care about her. What happens when you peg the wrong man for the rape? Especially during and election year? What happens when that wrong man things his life if over as he knows it and goes after Joe? Will Joe recover enough to make it back to work? Will the rape of Gail be the end of the road for Joe and Gail? This book has lots of twists and turns and keeps you on your toes.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a great audiobook to listen to or a first time listener. This will have them hooked on audiobooks for life

good plot, one of his best

the premise here was really solid and sympathic. everything went well in terms of plot and character development until the end when as always the radio gives out and our hero is without backup.

Excellent Story Treatment of Sexual Assault

This is my fourth Gunther audiobook, and by far, it exceeded the previous two that I listened to. Tom Taylorson, the narrator is the reason that I continued to listen even as my excitement/enjoyment of the previous two waned; BUT Mayer hit it out of the park with this one. Rape is a subject that is often glossed over where the feelings of the rape victim and her friends and family are concerned. Archer Mayor wove those feelings and the police work needed to apprehend the rapist masterfully. He told us at the beginning of the book that he would put some focus on the rape victim rather than just on the cop side of the issue, and he came through with flying colors. Choosing to write with sensitivity about the victim in no way diluted the action portrayed in the story. I was so engrossed that I listened to this audiobook continuously, which is something I don't normally do. Thank you, Archer Mayor!

The best yet...

I’ve been on the fence with this series but I’ve made it this far. I feel that some of the action scenes are rather repetitive from the other books and some of the dialogue repeats itself but with that being said this book made me realize the love I have for these books. This book deals with a difficult subject matter in a sensitive way touching on some underlying issues that aren’t always covered, full disclosure I’m a man and might not be the best judge on how difficult these topics are. To get to the specifics of this book and what made it so good are how the relationships that have built up in the earlier books became more natural and you feel the characters come alive. I would highly recommend this book series. The narrator is also simply one of the best and I look forward to continuing with these books.

Best so far.

For me, these just keep getting better. I still don’t listen to the authors notes at the beginning and there was still an abrupt ending but this time it was apt.
