New York wedding planner Mercy Rose is looking forward to a future not unlike the fairy tales she creates day after day for her clients. She's even got the perfect prince to seal her fairy-tale fate. But when a hurricane savagely blows through her small hometown in rural Louisiana, it's her past she needs to worry about.
Going home means risking more than finding her family's B&B in ruins; it could mean churning up every last piece of her past she thought was dead and buried. Mainly, every piece she ever shared with Frank Kingston. The boy next door and her first love.
Determined to prove she's moved on, Mercy sets her sights only on matters of the hurricane and serving the community ravaged by it. But the longer she's here, the harder it gets to separate who she's become from who she's always been. And, the harder it gets to deny, the boy who broke her heart...could now turn out to be the man who still owns it.
All Once Upon a Wedding stories are stand-alones and do not need to be enjoyed in order.

As the story progresses, we find out that Mercy left behind a B&B in Nolo that was owned by her much-loved grandmother who has since passed. A grandmother that we now have to presume she has not seen at the B&B because Mercy hasn't been back in ten years. A grandmother who has passed within the ten years but, if Mercy's ten year hiatus is to be believed, Mercy did not attend the service. What? For a grandmother she considered her last connection to her father and who left her a B&B that she is risking life and limb to check on? Mercy didn't attend her funeral? First question mark.
Mercy had a boyfriend all through high school. Some misunderstanding happened with that boyfriend and Mercy left, never to see or discuss things with him, or anyone else in her hometown, until she returned ten years later. Okay, that could happen, but Mercy was also best friends with the boyfriends sister and very good friends with the boyfriends best friend. Neither of them, over ten years, bothered to clear up the misunderstanding? Second question mark.
Now, I still stuck with the story because the narration was really good and I wanted to listen. Here is where I got lost in the weeds. If the boyfriends sister is Mercy's "ex-best friend," something happened. What? Enter the sister. She teases her brother about still being in love with Mercy (um), challenges him to man up and tell her, and then when Mercy and the sister meet (the morning after Mercy arrives to check on the B&B), the sister and Mercy have a quick interaction with no mention of why no contact in ten years. It's like it never happened. Third question mark.
When I finally stopped listening it was when the boyfriend told his friend that he (the boyfriend) told Mercy that he still loved her. WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN??? I noped out. It could have happened but that's a pivotal plot point and there should have been a response/discussion. I don't think I would have missed it. Fourth and final question mark.
I'm not being nitpicky. I just needed the story to make sense. There will be a HEA, as always with this genre, but I can't endure anymore of this story when I have to stop and constantly question why or how something is happening.

The narrator is awesome at voices to match the personally of each character. It really helps you get lost in the story.
