Publisher's summary

From master storyteller Melina Marchetta comes an exhilarating new fantasy springing from her celebrated epic, Finnikin of the Rock. Three years after the curse on Lumatere was lifted, Froi has found his home...or so he believes. Fiercely loyal to the Queen and Finnikin, Froi has been taken roughly and lovingly in hand by the Guard sworn to protect the royal family, and has learned to control his quick temper with a warrior's discipline.

But when he is sent on a secretive mission to the kingdom of Charyn, nothing could have prepared him for what he finds in its surreal royal court. Soon he must unravel both the dark bonds of kinship and the mysteries of a half-mad princess in this barren and mysterious place. It is in Charyn that he will discover there is a song sleeping in his blood... and though Froi would rather not, the time has come to listen.

Even better than Finnikin of the Rock!

More original plot, more rich in themes and literary devices, more poetically written, and more eloquently read by the actor than the 1st book in the series. The Chronicles of Lumatere improve with each book.

Brilliant!!

This author is phenomenal!!
I didn't even take into account that this book was written in 2013, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had zero trouble remembering the names of ppl and places like I did in the first book, and, yes I remembered most names from book one if not all, which I read 3 years ago I might add. Which is bananas.
Loved it, it's been a while since I enjoyed an epic fantasy series like this, and I'm only glad I have book 3 in hand.

Amazing and sometimes painful story

Any additional comments?

This is a wrenching story about guilt, family and the horrendous pain and joy that people can inflict on each-other(it can also be very funny at the strangest times).

This does end on a cliffhanger so be prepared to buy the next book.

Forever favorite

I have loved this book since its publish date and reread many times! Marchetta always finds a way to bring all the characters into perfect sync and it never feels contrived.

Can you give negative stars ?

If you like reading a story where the secondary character is repeatedly raped, escapes their rapist with help from another rapist, and then gets returned to the first rapist, this story is for you. Otherwise, hard pass. The first story in this trilogy was rather good, and I kept waiting for this one to get better. But it got worse and worse with the additional discussion of a tertiary character’s rape. This story is basically one rape after another. The reader does a fine job, it’s the story which is just.so.bad.
