About this listen

Freedom Spring tells the story of a young African American soldier in the American Civil War. For Jim Coffee, a 14-year-old slave in 1864 Alabama, life was about to turn upside down.

Freedom Spring is a novel of Jim’s journey from slavery to the Union Army and freedom. Meghan Markle’s great-great-great-great-grandfather Joseph Betts fought in the battles portrayed. Following the research of esteemed North Alabama historian and author Peggy Towns, Freedom Spring immerses you in the events that shaped a nation. The courage and perseverance of brave African American soldiers wrote an unsung chapter in American history that can now be told.

Author Kurt Vetters once again puts us in his time machine. We travel to the last year of the American Civil War to share the challenges, sorrow, tragedies, and elation of fourteen-year-old Jim Coffee, who sought out freedom after the suicide of his owner/father (North Alabama).

Having read and enjoyed Kurt’s first book, Confederate Winter, I was thrilled to discover intersecting storylines and shared characters. Jim’s wartime adventures span Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida. Now that I have completed this second Vetters book, these common characters almost feel like family.

Accurate military recounts, engaging dialogue, and moving personal interactions make this an educational and enjoyable read. Jess Vetters marvelously narrates this audible presentation. I highly recommend ‘Freedom Spring.’

Poignant tale of black Union soldiers.
