Publisher's summary

In Fortytude, therapist Sarah Brokaw presents a new understanding of how women can greet midlife with strength and freedom. Brokaw, who happens to be the daughter of Tom Brokaw and who is herself in her late 30s, will share personal experiences as well as professional wisdom - in a lively, engaging voice. In her practice, Brokaw specializes in female clients between 35 and 55, and she has come to recognize five qualities held by the women who navigate the most successful passages through midlife:

  • Grace
  • Connectedness
  • Accomplishment
  • Adventure
  • Spirituality

Brokaw identifies these five qualities and shows how any woman can foster them in herself. Brokaw's advice and insights will empower listeners to move toward the most productive and satisfying years of their lives - in the same way that Gail Sheehy did with Passages, and Harriet Lerner and Maggie Scharf did in their best sellers in the 80s and 90s.

Complete waste of your time

If you are looking for insight, you will not find it here. It is an almost random collection of anecdotes of friends and acquaintances of Brokaw which only go to show, "At least some people have it way worse than you do." If you like that kind of read, good for you. But if you prefer a little more research or science in your reading, this is not the book for you. But even more irritating than the weak content is the incredibly poor reading by Brokaw. Pauses are in the wrong place, while the need for a pause after a period, comma, or semi-colon is equally ignored. Some words are pronounced incorrectly, which, with everything else, gives this title an ignorant, second-rate feeling. All over, don't waste your time with this one.
