Story
How have so many Christian leaders and institutions been lured by toxic and abusive power? Why are so many Christians tempted to chase worldly success and status? Because, according to Jamin Goggin and Kyle Strobel, rather than seeking kingdom power embodied by Jesus, we have embraced a form of power that is antithetical to the cross. Christians have succumbed to the temptations of power and forgotten Jesus’ seemingly contradictory path to power - first giving it up.

From Bonhoeffer, we learn that the Christian life is lived both alone and together, and that there is a stark difference between cheap and costly grace.

In this definitive and long-awaited biography, Jonathan Edwards emerges as both a great American and a brilliant Christian. George Marsden evokes the world of colonial New England in which Edwards was reared - a frontier civilization at the center of a conflict between Native Americans, French Catholics, and English Protestants. Drawing on newly available sources, Marsden demonstrates how these cultural and religious battles shaped Edwards' life and thought.

The gospel is the offering of God's presence to men. It is the invitation into a life of experiencing God. The inspiration of our lives must be our past experiences of him; our satisfaction must be our present experience of him; our hunger is for our future experiences of him. I would much rather touch him than attempt to define him. I would rather move him than seek to simply understand him. I would rather know him than merely perform his works.

The Christian life is a process of growing in holiness, our natural response to the good news of our redemption in Christ. This kind of growth is gradual, and obstacles are plentiful. Thankfully, we don't have to go it alone. God has given us his Spirit so that we can overcome temptation and become more and more conformed to the image of Christ. But how does the Spirit work? What is the nature of our own personal involvement in the process? And how do we know if we are making progress?

Publisher's Summary
Jesus said we should focus our minds and hearts on God above all else. No small task! Is there someone we can turn to for help?
"Wisdom tells us to sit at the feet of our elders rather than the latest ministry fad," notes author Kyle Strobel. And is there a better elder to guide us than Jonathan Edwards?
In Edwards, the 18th-century Puritan pastor and theologian, we find deep thought balanced with deep passion. Through his writings and practices, Edwards provides us with the tools - the "means of grace" - that make us receptive to God's work in our lives as we learn to abide in Christ. Here, we find a well-rounded account of being formed for the glory of God.

Awe-inspiring!
Kyle Strobel takes Jonathan Edwards's work and makes it accessible to less-learned people. This audiobook is interesting, insightful, thought-provoking, and motivating. It explains several important theological terms in an understandable way. It encourages Christian living and spiritual formation (explained in the book). There are still a lot of difficult theological concepts, so this is not a book to read casually. However, I would highly recommend this book to all Christians who are interested in deepening their relationship with Jesus Christ.

Not given to speculation on Edwards's thinking on the topics discussed; the writer quotes Edwards himself extensively throughout. Highly recommended. You will be blessed by reading/listening to this book.

Spiritual God-Help Guide
The first thing that the author says is that this isn’t a self-help guide. It isn’t a ‘1.2.3- you’re fixed!’ Guide, but it is perfect for those of us Christians who feel like automatons who, blithely trot out the correct biblical sayings in rote form about developing a relationship with Jesus Christ, yet who obviously (in my opinion), don’t actually have that relationship. I raise my hand…😏
I have endeavoured to find out how to develop such a relationship. Many Christians that I asked, over the years, would tell me to read my Bible more. So I set out to do that. Having read my Bible from Genesis to Revelation a few times (4 I think), I was no closer to the desired relationship. Then I was told to STUDY the Bible. This is, of course, a wholly different aspect and very enlightening - if done properly - which I’m not confident that I always did. I needed more.
I ‘stumbled’ across two books, which came free in Audible’s new audibleplus library. This was one of them. It is life changing! Not a ‘Christianity By Numbers’ but a genuinely helpful introduction to meeting and knowing The Lord Jesus. How to fathom the love that He has for us and what that translates to in our reciprocal love for Him. How to develop a lifestyle of wisdom and love that, in the fullness of time, will gain you the spirituality, the proper manifestation of The Holy Spirit in your life.
I’m not there yet (of course), but I have a clearer idea of how to get there. As with weight management, or playing a musical instrument, or any other feat/activity that we strive for, this isn’t the work of a moment. But it requires the same disciplines and dedication. The other audiobook I got under this bonus catalogue, was how to effectively study the Bible. Both of them are worth their weight in Audible Credits!
If you’re sincerely seeking God, this book will show you one of the best ways to go about it. I’m not an Evangelical Christian, but you don’t need to be to benefit from this book. All you need is the Triune Godhead and a sincere desire. The section on Prayer, will change your life.
This is an utterly engaging book, very well narrated. I will be listening and re-listening to this for many months to come.

The life of Elijah has gripped the thought and imagination of preachers and writers in all ages. His sudden appearance out of complete obscurity, his dramatic interventions in the national history of Israel, his miracles, his departure from the earth in a chariot of fire all serve to that end. He comes in like a tempest, who went out like a whirlwind. The first we hear from him is an oath and a threat. It is fitting that the lessons which may be drawn from Elijah's ministry should be presented afresh to our generation.

All Things for Good by Thomas Watson provides the biblical answer to the contemporary question: Why do bad things happen to good people? Thomas Watson, the 17th-century minister of St. Stephen's Walbrook, believed he faced two great difficulties in his pastoral ministry. The first was making the unbeliever sad in the recognition of his need of God's grace. The second was making the believer joyful in response to God's grace.

Moody, one of the 19th century's greatest evangelists, shows how simple salvation is. Avoiding heavy philosophy, he simply shows "the way to God."

Story
The life of Elijah has gripped the thought and imagination of preachers and writers in all ages. His sudden appearance out of complete obscurity, his dramatic interventions in the national history of Israel, his miracles, his departure from the earth in a chariot of fire all serve to that end. He comes in like a tempest, who went out like a whirlwind. The first we hear from him is an oath and a threat. It is fitting that the lessons which may be drawn from Elijah's ministry should be presented afresh to our generation.

Story
All Things for Good by Thomas Watson provides the biblical answer to the contemporary question: Why do bad things happen to good people? Thomas Watson, the 17th-century minister of St. Stephen's Walbrook, believed he faced two great difficulties in his pastoral ministry. The first was making the unbeliever sad in the recognition of his need of God's grace. The second was making the believer joyful in response to God's grace.

Do you feel discouraged, even defeated, in your battle against habitual sin? Elyse Fitzpatrick delves into the heart of the problem: deep down, we're all idol worshippers who put our loves, desires, and expectations in God's place - and then suffer the consequences of our misplaced affections. Yet God loves his people and can use even our messy lives and struggles for his glory. Fitzpatrick shows us how to better search and know our hearts, long for our gracious Savior, and resist and crush our false gods. Included are questions for further thought.

Story
Speaker and writer J. C. Ryle once said, "The man who hears the word of God and does it is the true Christian. He hears the call of God to repent and be converted, and he obeys it. He ceases to do evil and learns to do well. He puts off the old man and puts on the new. He hears the call of God to believe in Jesus Christ for justification, and he obeys it." In The True Christian, Ryle details many more ways in which Christians can be uncompromising in their biblical principles.

Story
"Present day conditions," writes Pink, "call loudly for a new examination and new presentation of God's omnipotence, God's sufficiency, God's sovereignty. From every pulpit in the land it needs to be thundered forth that God still lives, that God still observes, that God still reigns. Faith is now in the crucible, it is being tested by fire, and there is no fixed and sufficient resting place for the heart and mind but in The Throne of God.

Story
Best-selling author and Bible teacher Sheila Walsh unpacks the deepest longings of a woman's heart and encourages listeners to discover God's relentless pursuit of them through those very longings. We vowed we'd never repeat the same mistakes - yet we find ourselves right where we started. What is it that keeps drawing us back into the same old traps? The fact is our longings are built from the blueprint of our needs - for protection, for love, for God - and those needs aren't going anywhere.
