Publisher's Summary

Iconic actress Hayley Mills shares personal memories from her storied childhood, growing up in a famous acting family and becoming a Disney child star, trying to grow up in a world that wanted her to stay forever young.

The daughter of acclaimed British actor Sir John Mills was still a preteen when she began her acting career and was quickly thrust into the spotlight. Under the wing of Walt Disney himself, Hayley Mills was transformed into one of the biggest child starlets of the 1960s through her iconic roles in Pollyanna, The Parent Trap, and many more. She became one of only 12 actors in history to be bestowed with the Academy Juvenile Award, presented at the Oscars by its first recipient, Shirley Temple, and went on to win a number of awards including a Golden Globe, multiple BAFTAs, and a Disney Legacy Award.

Now, in her charming and forthright memoir, she provides a unique window into when Hollywood was still "Tinseltown" and the great Walt Disney was at his zenith, ruling over what was (at least in his own head) still a family business. This behind-the-scenes look at the drama of having a sky-rocketing career as a young teen in an esteemed acting family will offer both her childhood impressions of the wild and glamorous world she was swept into, and the wisdom and broader knowledge that time has given her. Hayley will delve intimately into her relationship with Walt Disney, as well as the emotional challenges of being bound to a wholesome, youthful public image as she grew into her later teen years, and how that impacted her and her choices - including marrying a producer over 30 years her senior when she was 20! With her regrets, her joys, her difficulties, and her triumphs, this is a compelling listen for any fan of classic Disney films and an inside look at a piece of real Hollywood history.

Excellent Detailed Acct. of her Years to Mid-70s

Once I saw the movies Tiger Bay and The Parent Trap, I was enchanted by British actress Hayley Mills and wanted to be just like her. For the most part though, we were different, of course, but after reading this biography of her first 3+ decades, our life stories were somewhat similar:- my life savings evaporated in the hands of an unscrupulous advisor, alcoholism was evidenced in my family also, I seemed confident but this was more bravado and thus underlying insecurity needed building-up. Etc but no sense in wrecking the book for you thru spoilers as it’s a good true story! The first shock for me was to hear that the voice of the narrator (Hayley herself) is no longer youthful because it’s now almost royally sonorous as if “to the manor born”. Likewise, the language is befitting the offspring of a writer which this actress is (her mother being author Mary Hayley Bell). Therefore, get used to hearing erudite vocabulary crop up from time to time — like zenith, miasma, vicissitudes, beatific, alacrity, even peripatetic etc. But I wish to limit my revelations to you because I really enjoyed unfolding the discoveries for myself. The second shock to me was to learn that lifelong nicknames given to sister Juliet and to Hayley by their loving parents were “Bunch” and “Bags”. Yes, you do read this correctly that Mrs. and Mr. (later Sir) John Mills called their precious Hayley “Bags” as in this paraphrased scene/exchange which I recount here now: Hayley @ age 20 to parents: “I am in love with Roy Boulting (aged 52)” Her father responds with: “Bags! Tell me you’re not serious!” But to know more of what happens in that dramatic scene from among so many in her exciting life, you will need to purchase this informative and interesting early life of being an admired and sought-after film star. In fact, Walt Disney fought hard to have this brilliant child signed to a contract and the intense negotiations process (involving agents too) is included in here … fascinating! His final letter to her (years later) revealed just how much he valued and loved her. And ditto, so did many of us…

I grieve for our lost childhood and youth

But we have moved on and life has been good. I was born in 1946 and a world away in location and situation. The mountains of Virginia and my parents were so different from yours. I grew up sheltered from everything and naive. I loved your book and have just finished it on Audible. And I feel sad but happy for you. I kept waiting for your comments on “The Flame Trees of Thika”. One of my favorite books and movies. Maybe for another book? So happy to hear your comments about Mr. Walt Disney! I am a great Disney fan. I am a Club 33 member at Walt Disney World and I would be delighted to take you as my guest if you are ever there. This is a wonderful book. And beautifully read.

Hayley captures your heart, as always

A voice we all know and love sharing her personal adventures, triumphs, and pitfalls in her journey on stage and screen, and the family thread running its course through all of it. Well written, beautifully narrated and a treasure of behind the scenes nuggets to all her work. Also, shame on you tax service in the UK. No wonder your talent moves to the United States!

Reunited

Hayley Mills was two years older than me when the Parent Trap took America by storm. I was an instant fan idolizing her completely. I even cut my hair to match hers in the movie. Around that time I started a Hayley Mills scrapbook which decades later I left at the stage door in Stamford CT for her amusement. I never heard a word from her or about her until now. How wonderful to know how her life turned out. Thank you, Hayley, for sharing the joys and challenges you faced and the peace you found.

Delightful and insightful

I was looking for a well-performed, thoughtful memoir- something I could listen to at night falling asleep that would not be agitating or require too much active though. This was so much more than that. Very good memoir with so much to offer the reader or in my case listener. Ms. Mills is now someone I feel I know, or at the least, someone I’d like to know, and really has told a story worth telling.

I could listen to Hayley forever ...

I rarely write a review, but this book is just too good. Here's one book I wish would never end. Wonderful story and a beautiful person. I kept going back while listening to "focus on the facts" when I got distracted-- only to learn even more. I'm sure I'll listen to her a second time around and plan to watch each of the films mentioned as I go.

Hayley - you are and will be Forever Young. Wish I had the chance to meet you in person. --- Danny

A Treasure

Hayley Mills is a true treasure. This is the memoir I’ve been waiting for, and it did not disappoint. I loved that Hayley narrated it herself, which made it even more magical. I loved hearing her experiences working with Disney, and how she transitioned to other non-Disney roles. Her recollections of friendships and encounters with other movie and music icons was also fun to hear about. It was hard to take breaks from this book. I listened in the car, at work, in the shower, and on the patio with a glass of wine.
