Publisher's Summary

Ilaria Tuti's thriller debut explores a remote community in northern Italy - a place of secrets, eerie folktales, and primal instincts.

In a quiet village surrounded by ancient woods and the imposing Italian Alps, a man is found naked with his eyes gouged out. It is the first in a string of gruesome murders.

Superintendent Teresa Battaglia, a detective with a background in criminal profiling, is called to investigate. Battaglia is in her mid-60s, her rank and expertise hard-won from decades of battling for respect in the male-dominated Italian police force. While she's not sure she trusts the young city inspector assigned to assist her, she sees right away that this is no ordinary case: buried deep in these mountains are whispers of a dark and dangerous history, possibly tied to a group of eight-year-old children toward whom the killer seems to gravitate.

As Teresa inches closer to the truth, she must also confront the possibility that her body and mind, worn down by age and illness, may fail her before the chase is over.

I loved this, very hard to put down,
the ending -well, both of them - delicious. To my great relief, this is the first of 3 InspectorTherese
Bataglia books. This is writing for the true detective fan. Reviews I read suggested readers who appreciate Scandinavian
noir will also be in for a wonderful
listen- the narrator is excellent.

Good story, a bit confusing at first.

I enjoyed this story. You need to pay attention when listening at the beginning as I was having a problem keeping track of all the characters. Teresa Battaglia's side story of dealing with her fear losing mind and not being able to function was very relevant to the fear we all have of growing older. I am intrigued that there will be another book as she seemed to be weak and unable to cope by the end. Will she suddenly find herself able to remember things and function in her capacity as superintendent without jeopardizing others lives? I will be waiting to see how the next book plays out. All in all a good listen once I figured out who everyone was and their parts in the story.
