A lone wolf cub struggling to survive mutates into a creature possessing unpredictable—even human—abilities in this grimdark fantasy adventure series.

Somewhere in the toxic Bone Pits, where mechanical nightmares roam, an emaciated and wounded young wolf clings to life. Wracked with pain, driven by instinct, it crawls across the subterranean landscape, avoiding the unnatural horrors that dwell there and seeking sustenance while fending off rats, insects, and other vermin stalking it as prey.

Then it encounters a deity who collects human souls and is astonished to discover a wolf, as its species has been extinct for centuries. The god spares the wolf, bestowing the wretched beast with the means to survive until it eventually acquires the power of heightened intelligence and the ability to alter its physiology, turning into a shapeshifting monstrosity.

Part of an adventuring party scouring the tunnels, the elf Emhreeil was injured and left for dead. Blind and with broken limbs, she suffers in unbearable agony, waiting for her body to quit—or for something to devour her. When the wolf finds Emhreeil, it pounces on the opportunity to learn human speech from the pitiful being incapable of protecting herself.

Now, Emhreeil is the wolf's de facto companion as it struggles to escape the Bone Pits, dragging her through the twisted labyrinth and fighting the vicious predators hiding in the shadows. And with every battle, the wolf evolves in self-awareness and cunning, mutating into a creature that nature never meant to breed . . .

I’m not some highly opinionated critic that can give fancy detail so sorry for that if that’s what helps you pick stories the best. I usually have a threshold or tipping point and either like something or I don’t. Even a poorly done story with poor voice acting can be enjoyable to me as I get used to it and it will be worth my time and I think this was real good in both story and narration as far as I can tell either way. I just liked this one a lot. I don’t actually care for the stats and numbers parts of any litrpg and mostly ignore them when they come up too often. This one was pretty tolerable in that way and I actually really appreciate that sometimes it only gave partial stats instead of the whole list over and over. I use audio to function under anxiety and this worked great for keeping my mind occupied enough to be okay- even if it a little gory and dark it was still a really hopeful story.

It was fun to listen to something different and new

I enjoyed it quite a bit, though a bit more gruesome than I was expecting and I’m excited for the next entry.

Interesting

Okay, so when I first saw this I was intrigued “hm, a story about a wolf who stays a wolf? Sounds neat.” But holy hell, I didn’t think I was gonna read something so wonderful.

I didn’t except something this good!

This book was exceptional. I loved every part of it. From the narration to the writing, all was great. Can't wait for the next one to become available.

Very descriptive

I really like that the main character of the story isn't even humanoid, it gives a fresh and new perspective to things that I really enjoyed. The way the story gets invested in the relationship between the elf and wolf is also a big hook for me.

fresh and hooked

First off, I enjoyed this book. Monster evolution great, unique setting (Steam Punk), challenges, and system all good. Main characters really have to work for it, yes! But, after reading an entire book I don't really have a good idea of what's going on with the larger world or plot. This is slow progression, it's grim and grinding survival, is there more, that's the question?? It's done very well, but man it takes a while. The climb of the broken elevator shaft, I'm exhausted, never mind the characters lol?

I will get the next book, but will check reviews, even just so I can see story progress (confession, I had to take a look Royal Road and read on because the end was killing me, pleased with what I read). You cannot end a book like that, I needed more!! Call me hopeful, but theirs potential here and I want to see where this goes,

Gave Story a 4. Performance definitely a solid 4+, it's great!

Enjoyed it a lot, grind is real, and slog is long.

Some scenes dragged way too long. Overall the book felt as something fresh but quickly fell down to many classic litrpg faults.

Good narrator

My first audiobook within this genre and I am so pleased, so obsessed. I need to know more about the wolf, about the human, the pack. The world's setting reminds me of the Fallout video games. It's got gore, fear, love, and laughter. For me, my favorite part was when the wolf's awareness would grow! I loved this story so much and I'm looking forward to more of it!

a perfect introduction to the genre
