Publisher's summary

From the best-selling authors of The Knockoff, an outrageously funny novel about one woman's attempt - through clay diets, naked yoga, green juice, and cultish workout classes - to win back her career, save her best friend, and lose 30 pounds.

When Janey Sweet, CEO of a couture wedding dress company, is photographed in the front row of a fashion show eating a bruffin - the delicious lovechild of a brioche and a muffin - her best friend and business partner, Beau, gives her an ultimatum: lose 30 pounds or lose your job. Sure, Janey has gained some weight since her divorce, and no, her beautifully cut trousers don't fit like they used to, so Janey throws herself headlong into the world of the fitness revolution, signing up for a shockingly expensive workout pass, baring it all for Free the Nipple yoga, sweating through boot camp classes run by Sri Lankan militants, and spinning to the screams of a Lycra-clad instructor with rage issues. At a juice shop she meets Jacob, a cute young guy who takes her Dumpster diving outside Whole Foods on their first date. At a shaman's tea ceremony, she meets Hugh, a silver fox who holds her hand through an ayahuasca hallucination. And at a secret exercise studio, Janey meets Sara Strong, the wildly popular workout guru whose special dance routine has starlets and wealthy women flocking to her for results that seem too good to be true.

As Janey eschews delicious carbs, pays thousands of dollars to charlatans, and is harassed by her very own fitness bracelet, she can't help but wonder: Did she really need to lose weight in the first place? A hilarious send-up of the health and wellness industry, Fitness Junkie is a glorious romp through the absurd landscape of our weight-obsessed culture.

Critic reviews

"I laughed out loud reading Fitness Junkie, which serves a heaping helping of hilarious satire, profiling the step-counting, calorie-obsessed New Yorkers who fill the cronut-shaped holes in their souls with workouts." (Jill Kargman, creator and star of Odd Mom Out)
" Fitness Junkie is a deliciously fun romp through the bizarre and cult-like workouts of the superrich, from naked yoga to clay diets to private island wellness retreats. Funny, frothy and delicious." (Jane Green, author of Falling)

Entertaining

Very funny and entertaining. The narrator was great at keeping the characters clear, and holding my attention. The book did not have a dull moment. This is a book I will recommend to friends looking for something light.

Vaguely entertaining with a complete plot

This book was okay. It's not as sharply witty in its observations as the author thinks it is, but nevertheless the characters are sort of likable and the story goes full circle in a way that doesn't seem cheap or rushed.

Good satire of the health and fitness industry

This is fun and funny. Anyone who has tried fad diets and / or fitness trends will smile at the absurdities this book describes. There is a positive message about self-image woven through the story. Some of it is over-the-top, but entertaining. Excellent narration !

Starts slow but ends well

Really enjoyed this book but it started a little slow while it was building the characters. Really enjoyed the last half of it!

Boring

Beach read with not very much excitement unfortunately. I expected a little more substance & fun.

Excellent

Dry wit that tackles the shameful industry of “wellness.” Well done! I found myself in stitches more often than not. It brought joyful healing to my own confidence scarred by the idea of a beautiful woman.

thrilled

although I hate that it focuses around the dangerous diet culture but it makes fun and brings light to it with a great ending. It takes you through something that a lot of women strive for but also cracking jokes at some of the foolishness. The women who read it are also wonderful. I like how they read.

Not as good as The Knockoff

Just okay. I was hoping that it would be as good as The Knockoff, but it sadly wasn't. It wasn't terrible, but I was disappointed.
