Publisher's Summary

A heist by the Serenity crew goes badly wrong in a captivating original Firefly tie-in novel from the award-winning series by Titan Books.

City of sin

Neapolis: a desert city on planet Bethel where all manner of entertainment is found: High-stakes gambling, luxurious hotels, exclusive clubs, and any form of diversion imaginable may be had for a price. It’s the eve of the annual carnival: three days of decadent revelry, and Serenity arrives to take a security job, guarding a costly shipment.

An unattainable ransom

Tragedy strikes: The shipment is stolen, and the wealthy owner kidnaps Zoë and Book, holding them to ransom for the lost shipment’s value. If Mal can’t find the enormous sum of 500 platinum by the next evening, both of them will be killed.

A race against time

As the carnival begins, the crew must attempt the impossible, calling on contacts, calling in favors, and revealing hidden talents to save their crewmates’ lives. Meanwhile, the hostages have their own plans....

Equal time with the whole gang

An excellent addition to the series. While the author is new, James Anderson Foster continues as narrator and this makes all the difference. This one takes a bit for the various plots to converge, but it feels like a quintessential Firefly episode: a job that goes sideways, each of the crew contributing in their unique way, and the banter… oh, the banter. When the Chinese sayings drop, I settle into the verse like it’s my comfiest pair of shoes.

I have enjoyed the entire series, with the exception of Ghost Machine. Currently, you can even get some of these as free listens in Audible Plus. Also, if you’re looking for similar space opera, try the Black Ocean Omnibus or the Fallen Kingdom collection (books 1-3) for motley crews, space adventure, and great value.

My new favorite in the series!

What really can I say but seriously the best book in the series for me so far! Thanks James Anderson Foster!! Your narration is the best! This book brings a few more strands in the tapestry of Firefly to view in the big picture, a must read/listen!

Great story with more time for supporting cast

You know how you fall in love with a series (TV, movie, or book) and get very much attached to the characters? And then the writer(s) keep putting those characters in mortal peril? Well, this book is no different, but what would you expect from the crew of the Serenity? No job is complete without a modicum of mayhem, and at least one person stepping in it big time.
This story in particular gives us a better look at Shepherd Derrial Book. While we still don't know what his past really is before he became a preacher, we are starting to get a little bit of a clearer picture, and it's intriguing. We also get a peek at Simon's pre-jailbreak days from an outside perspective, which is an odd combination of new and somehow totally predictable.
The story has plenty of action, though less than some others in the series. It definitely made me late to work more than once because I couldn't stop listening and get out of the car.
The reader is, as always, phenomenal. I absolutely recommend it for any Firefly fan who still holds a grudge against Fox.

Okay for the most part but...

Pretty good story for the most part, but way too much religious nonsense. The narrator was awesome!

Very well crafted and faithful to the series

It's 5 STARS for a FIREFLY story, not an ultimate novel folks...

I immediately looked to see what else Una McCormac has written. This was more complex than most Firefly stories with several moving pieces that were nicely interconnected.
There were good resolutions to each.
The story was frequently funny and always fun, even though the parts structured to get one's blood boiling in anger. Much like good camaraderie is in real life.

A different direction for the 6th book

Where as the first 5 books seem to follow one another, this story is set between episodes of the original series. It shows a really different story and helps you get to know the characters you love even better. As with all the audio books in this series the voices are performed beautifully by James Anderson Foster and it has been a delight to revisit the ‘verse through these lovely exciting and brilliant stories.

Disappointing

Sadly nowhere near as good as the previous books in the series. The plot is plodding and this seems to be character driven whereas the previous instalments were a lovely combination of tension, action and dark humour. There is still humour here but it’s slightly juvenile and obvious. More worrying, Mal is portrayed as something of a buffoon throughout as opposed to the tiny bit tortured soul that we know and love. Jane (believe it or not is even more of a staggering Neanderthal). It all feels very forced and at times a little foolish. I haven’t quite finished it yet and am still trying to decide whether or not to even bother. Shame. Loved the others.

Could have easily been a 2-part episode.

Loved this lost chapter. A must for anyone who enjoyed the show. Stayed true to the characters and their ways (maybe Jane was a bit more of an asshole than usual).

written by a Mal hater

the worst of the Firefly series. this book makes the crew of Serenity to be babbling fools. Mal is a complete moron according to this book. sorry but a poor example of this crew
