Publisher's summary

Cloister Witte is a man with a dark past and a cute dog. He’s happy to talk about the dog all day, but after growing up in the shadow of a missing brother, a deadbeat dad, and a criminal stepfather, he’d rather leave the past back in Montana. These days, he’s a K-9 officer in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and pays a tithe to his ghosts by doing what no one was able to do for his brother - find the missing and bring them home.

He’s good at solving difficult mysteries. The dog is even better.

This time, the missing person is a 10-year-old boy who walked into the woods in the middle of the night and didn’t come back. With the antagonistic help of distractingly handsome FBI Agent Javi Merlo, it quickly becomes clear that Drew Hartley didn’t run away. He was taken, and the evidence implies he’s not the kidnapper’s first victim. As the search intensifies, old grudges and tragedies are pulled into the light of day. But with each clue they uncover, it looks less and less likely that Drew will be found alive.

The characters are just so damn unlikable

I actually l Thought the plot could have been really good, I found it hard to follow in some spots but overall thought it was an ok mystery plot. What really sunk this book for me was just how unlikeable all of the characters managed to be except for the dog, literally every character besides the dog I wanted to get crushed by a bolder. I found Javi to be soooooo annoying, I actually liked him in the beginning because I totally understand having a chip on your shoulder because you feel like you have to work harder then other people around you, this actually made me really like him in the first couple of chapter but then it keeps going. Sometimes characters who are assholes and know they’re assholes can be really endearing to me but what Javi has is just a fragile ego and a personality issue. He repeatedly states he knows he’s an asshole and doesn’t care about anything/anyone and gets why people don’t like him but then in the next sentence he feels the need to keep telling Cloister that they aren’t dating even though Cloister never says anything to insinuate that they are besides be a decent human being??? It’s just a stupid thing to keep saying how unlikeable you are but then tell someone not to like you because your so irresistible?? Then Cloister is sort of okay but you learn so little about his mysterious past that is continuously mentioned but not explored that I never felt like I got to know him at all. It ended up being very frustrating how much the past that made him is mentioned but never discussed like a tease. The entire family of the missing boy are just worst from the mom to the brother I hated them and had no sympathy. Overall I thought the book could have been good but the characters (besides the dog) are just a miss for me.

I wanted to like it but not my jam.

I tried twice to listen to this and found there were big sections I skipped over. The bad line story has great promise and was interesting, but there was more violent sexual content than story. Others may enjoy. Just not for me.

Great mystery

I really enjoy this author's work. I find the details within the story telling always give it an extra edge, and this one was no different

The layers we have to navigate are thrilling on top of the budding romance between the two main MC. This keeps us guessing almost until the end, and even then, you feel sorry for the person. They were not given a fair start.

The narration marvelously kept me on edge the whole time. Michael Fell did a great job.

I noticed a bk 2, not the same narrator. Even though that's a no for me(changing narrator), I did listen to the sample, and nope. I did not like the new 'voices' of these characters. Shame, I was really hoping to pick up a new series.

Great story. Great narration.

This book is one of my favorite types of stories, a layered mystery with clues leading to a bigger story arc that also includes a dash of romance. The author did justice to my favorite type of story. The fact that a dog is a main character is an extra perk... really. It couldn't possibly be the reason I picked up this book in the first place . 😏

The mystery is thought provoking, the characters are engaging, and the setting is beautifully illustrated. The narration was well performed and suited the rhythm of the writing.

I rarely offer up five stars for a first read/listen, but I was tempted for this book because I want to listen to it again already.

Javi is a dick

It's hard to get into a romance when it takes more than 10 chapters for one of the guys to stop being an ass. I'm not sure what chapter Javi stops being such a stuck up asshole because I had to stop when I reached chapter 10 and he was still a snobby bitch.

some of the worst police work I've heard

so before I gripe. I will say that TA at least got the gloves part right in police procedures. end of praise. what the actual hell's was this mess. did TA even Google law enforcement procedures or just guess. Javi was a prick the whole book and cloister let everyone walk all over him. there is no backstory for javi and I don't think any could redeem or explain his dickishness away. cloister is a cop with a dog but is treated like he's just some guy walking his dog through a crime scene. like you don't start out on the k9 unit. you work up to that and most departments want a dog over tech any day. not in TAs world. you pair that with the abusive relationship between the mains . wtf. the next books highly recommend and I'm curious enough to look it up on why. for the narrator. he was a little slow at times
I found listening at 1.5 or 1.10 speed helped.

I want more of this series

Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Did I feel an emotional connection to the characters: yes
Were there any parts I found annoying: Javi - sometimes I just wanted to shake some sense into him (lol!)
Would I listen to it again: absolutely
Story comments: This was a great mystery, one with a conclusion I didn't see coming. Cloister and Javi are both complicated men but it was Bon-Bon who stole the show !
Narrator comments: I have a few books narrated by Michael Fell and I always enjoy his work. He does an excellent job with clear distinct characters and brining the story to life.
... I really hope book 2 is bought to audio !
