Publisher's Summary

Meet Tony Hill's most twisted adversary - a killer with a shopping list of victims, driven by the most perverted of desires. The murder and mutilation of teenager Jennifer Maidment is horrific enough on its own. But it's not long before Tony realises it's just the start of a brutal and ruthless campaign that's targeting an apparently unconnected group of young people. Tony battles to find the answers that will give him personal and professional satisfaction in his most testing investigation yet.

My first Val McDermid

High body count but great twists, some predictable as is the interaction between the main protagonist's but overall a good Detective Novel

The most annoying narration I have heard

I nearly returned this book because the narration was so incredibly plodding. Every word was picked out in a jarring staccato akin to a toddler learning to read. And the accents were even worse; never in my life have I heard such a bad Liverpudlian accent!!

Having said all of that, the only reason that I endured the narration was because the storyline showed promise. Having got to the end, I'm quite pleased that I did. I will listen to the next in the series as long as it has a different narrator...

A little predictable but good overall

I did get that annoying feeling I knew the answers quicker than the detective team on this one but overall a good, compelling story.

Very poor writing - lots of bad language

I found the actual story OK, but realised that my interest was waning when I started to look to see how much more of the story I still had to listen to - only to see I was less than a third of the way through.

I usually love Saul Reichlin's narrations, but in this story he sounded very stilted and very slow - as if talking to a three year old, articulating his words very purposefully.

I was unimpressed by the CONSTANT reminders that various characters were lesbian - how this added to the tale I do not know - frankly I don't care about anyone's sexual preferences - I cannot think it makes any difference to the way that they carry out their work. I just find it unnecessarily intrusive!

This book reminded me why I stopped reading books by Val McDermid

Poor narrator

Boring, disinterested voice. Decent story made unlistenable. Will avoid this guy entirely in future. More appropriate narration needs to be considered

Poor climax

I actually bought the kindle edition to check that audible hadn’t missed out a chapter (39) ... it hadn’t. This would have been vastly better if it hadn’t been cut short.

The overall story is excellent.

Lots of twists and parallel storylines

It is pretty gory and I had to skip a few bits because of this but characters were interesting and believable.

disappointed

sadly the narrator just didn't manage to engage me sufficiently. I think it is very idiosyncratic...Bill Nighy could read the telephone directory and I'd find it fascinating!
