Federation - political, near-future science fiction for the listeners who enjoys imagining how the world would react to alien contact.

Author's Note: "This novel has attracted some strange and unexpected reactions - science fiction readers are usually open-minded individuals, but some seem to have trouble understanding that this is a story - fiction. In a few reviews, Federation has been castigated by narrow-minded individuals who think it is some sort of socialist or communist manifesto. Surely, that would be like accusing George Orwell of promoting totalitarianism because he wrote 1984! If you are open-minded, you will love this for being what it is - a science fiction 'what-if' trilogy, not a political treatise. Please don't buy it if you find social justice offensive."

Federation takes close encounters to a whole new level. A galactic empire of a quarter of a million worlds stumbles across the earth. When they ask, "take me to your leader", the world is thrown into panic. We have no world leader, only many who might like to be. With elements of a political thriller, there is an intriguing storyline which addresses the environmental and myriad social problems faced by the world today.

The aliens’ philosophy on life is totally unexpected. With the help of intelligent automatons, they've turned what many on earth believe to be a reviled political system into a utopia for the masses, but are they a force for good or evil, and will the wealthy make the compromises needed for a successful outcome?

The story is told by a Daragnen University Graduate, Rummy Breganin. He discovers that earth failed in its attempt to join the federation, and, for some unknown reason, members are forever banned from visiting or contacting the planet. Rummy had never heard of a whole world being outlawed. Perhaps it would be sensible to leave well enough alone but no, he decides to investigate.

The narrator, her accent I’m sorry. I just couldn’t get past it. The story was OK.

The narrators accent is just the worst

It reminds me a bit of Idiocracy... (satire becoming more of a documentary) What scares me is that Tony may have it right! 😀

I enjoyed this book, and will be getting the second one. The author does let you know that this book is critical of our modern system of capitalism, and does a good job showing some interesting alien UBI-esque solutions. I think this is done well, and don't understand why some would get butt-hurt about that. I’m curious to see what’s the story will go from here!

The Narrator takes some getting used to. Normally I listed at 3.5x but I had to slow it down to 2.7x. After about 10 mins, there was no issue.

Surprisingly good!

I bought this to get some thought-provoking space communism to listen to and while I got a flat space society, there wasn’t more to it than that. It was very flat. ”We can solve all your problems and all you have to do is say yes.” The one problem raised in the whole plot is the wealthy wanting to keep their wealth. I’m just wondering, how does space society manage people who spend all their money binge drinking in two weeks? The author for sure is no entrepreneur. How is innovation handled? ”Discuss your idea with a robot who decides if it’s viable or if you get to make a few copies of your product as souvenirs at your own expense.” Sure there’s been a lot of great innovation through the years based on filing administrative forms and then calculating viability in certain terms. ”There will be zero crime in society.” There’s just about zero cultural expression in the book - or is that a hidden tyrannical flaw of the federation? Every alien is brainwashed to use the same propaganda. ”I’m just glad I don’t have to spend my time working.” Hey sir the farm which has been in your family for generations is being taken over by robots and you won’t ever see it again, your thoughts? ”I’m just glad I don’t have to spend my time working.” DOES YOUR FAMILY FARM HAVE NO SENTIMENTAL VALUE TO YOU? How about the life changing crisis of going from being a very important part of society, to never again being needed or expected by anyone? ”Don’t say such blasphemous things, sir, we will not hesitate to put you in stasis.”

To be honest, my impression of the federation is that it would induce depression in a majority of humans - probably all of us at some point, and that it would within minutes medicate it away and numb our thinking until all we could say is ”I’m just glad I don’t have to work.”
Meanwhile here’s me looking forward more to going to work tomorrow, than to finishing the last part of the book.

Uninteresting

This is nothing but a horrible propaganda diatribe about leftist views. This had so much potential I tried to finish it but it was like reading a brochure from occupy wall street or any other leftist propaganda. I want my money back for this one

Nothing But a long diatribe Horible story
