Acerca de esta escucha

Michael O'Brien presents a thrilling apocalyptic novel about the condition of the Roman Catholic Church at the end of time. It explores the state of the modern world, and the strengths and weaknesses of the contemporary religious scene, by taking his central character, Father Elijah Schäfer, a Carmelite priest, on a secret mission for the Vatican which embroils him in a series of crises and subterfuges affecting the ultimate destiny of the Church.

Father Elijah is a convert from Judaism, a survivor of the Holocaust, a man once powerful in Israel. For twenty years he has been "buried in the dark night of Carmel" on the mountain of the prophet Elijah. The Pope and the Cardinal Secretary of State call him out of obscurity and give him a task of the highest sensitivity: to penetrate into the inner circles of a man whom they believe may be the Antichrist. Their purpose: to call the Man of Sin to repentance, and thus to postpone the great tribulation long enough to preach the Gospel to the whole world.

In this richly textured tale, Father Elijah crosses Europe and the Middle East, moves through the echelons of world power, meets saints and sinners, presidents, judges, mystics, embattled Catholic journalists, faithful priests and a conspiracy of traitors within the very House of God. This is an apocalypse in the old literary sense, but one that was written in the light of Christian revelation.

I’ve been meaning to read this for more than 15 years, and after all the build up it didn’t disappoint.

Epic story!

he way this story plays out is too earily close to current events, all told with reverence in a way that both touches you and leaves you at the edge of your seat.

gripping and heartfelt

I’ve read this book before and loved it. This time I decided to get the audio. The story is wonderful but the narration was dismal. The narrator used old and sniveling voices which didn’t represent the depth of the characters at all. I wouldn’t download another book with this narrator.

Terrible narration

Loved it! The story was gripping, informative and fun! Move over left behind series ( which I enjoyed). I sure hope the sequel Elijah in Jerusalem shows up on this audible soon! I would highly recommend this book and I’m currently reading the sequel!

An end times story for Catholics and all!

I’ve been wanting to read this one for a while. The narration distracts. The audio production leaves much to be desired, especially when the edits are obvious, the audio quality varies, and at least once the two sections of the book are layered one over the other. Pity, because this is not a great novel but it’s a good enough yarn, a bit hamfisted but fundamentally sound.

Subpar audio production

I have read the book and wanted to revisit the story in light of reading Lord of the World at the behest of Pope Francis. This modernizes Bensons apocalyptic book and stands the test of time. The reader has a monumental task and is very good. So many accents, so many ages, some dark some light…but perhaps it is best to read this book and allow the story to speak directly to you.

This is the story told of Gods final plans for us. So much love, so much hard truth. The author can get lost in his love of the lecture but the faith and love he exhorts us to embrace is gripping. Read it and renew your faith.

Depth of characterizations.

Love the content and the reader. Deep and meaningful. Life changing, profound, addresses the meaning of human weakness and strength.

Excellent story telling
