Publisher's summary

Ilahna Harkins will do whatever it takes to save her brother.

Two centuries after the Godfell War, Ilahna knows that the only way to survive in Clearwall is to be faster and smarter than everyone else. She stays on her toes, steals what she needs...and never ever mentions magic.

Because magic is the way of the Faoii, and witches get burned in Clearwall.

Being silent isn't always enough, though, and when her brother starts manifesting strange powers, Ilahna knows they don't have much time.

Hunted across Clearwall, the siblings must unbury a lifetime’s worth of lies and secrets with the help of unlikely allies...or find themselves lashed to the pyre like all the Faoii that came before.

Faoii Betrayer is the riveting and highly-anticipated second novel in the Faoii Chronicles.

Exciting and Engaging

Tahani Nelson, the author of the Faoii series, has taken the second book in this series in a totally different direction while maintaining some connections with the first book. Kai, the betrayer appears in this book, but it is a world that is different from all that she knew before. Nelson has taken a well-built world and turned it upside down in innovative and creative ways to create this second book of the series. Ilahna and her brother are the main characters who are determined to bring back the Faoii ways and shut down the ruling hierarchy.

While I enjoyed the first book, the second one is just as intriguing and different as the first. Building on the previous book, this one takes some drastic twists that are guaranteed to keep the listener on the edge of their chair. Nelson takes her time building each character with depth thus producing some very deep and strong female leads. The powers that Ilahna and her brother manifest throughout the book are unique and interesting adding to the suspense of the story.

The narrator, Sara Morsey, is perfect for the story. Her performance adds to the intrigue of the story as she projects the appropriate voice and tone for each character and incident. Morsey moves the story along at a steady pace as she seems to assume each role seamlessly and powerfully. Morsey skillfully brings the story and characters to life.

I look forward to the next book in this series to see where the mind and creativity of Tahani Nelson lead her audience.

Dig Deeper, Reader! (No Spoilers)

The first thing that strikes you about the series is how all of the descriptions are deliciously palpable. If you are the kind of reader that pictures yourself actually there, as a bystander, you can smell the smells; you can taste the tastes that Nelson depicts.

The characters are very real and actually do go through struggles! Many stories have a sort of protagonist "god-mode" enabled and the fear behind big important decisions feels muted by comparison to a negative occurrence for your favorite character. Nelson tells it like it would have happened in our world! I've always said that a good story must have all elements and it is really nice to see that echoed in written form.

I implore any of you that read or listen to this story to dig deeper and find the connections between Faoii and life, they are simply innumerable. Nelson portrays a very clear, concise and worldly understanding of societal customs and things that sway them. Each reader will find a different aspect to latch onto; every person will identify in a different way, which truly speaks to the mastery and love with which the story was written. If you search for them, the ties to modern-day society are all there, and so eerily accurate, you truly can forget that you are reading a work of fiction. It does not, at all, feel as if this happened "many centuries ago, in a galaxy far far away."

The story connected with me on a deep level, and I found myself almost in the battles myself, back-to-back with the characters, bleeding their blood; crying their tears! So many times I found myself grinning, or furious, or misty-eyed at the amount of soul the book has. And best of all, it has rekindled my love of reading after over a decade of me not making time for it.

My only caution to the reader is to just keep going! It's worth it! If you find yourself confused, just keep swimming!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now we discuss the performance of the narrator, and while I must admit starting off not caring for the voice that read to me, I recently picked up the third book in the series. And even now, while I am reading the physical copy, my internal monologue is in Sara's voice... So I guess I loved her and didn't even realize it! Well done! Especially differentiating the voices but being able to go back to the same ones time and again!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In short, A Must Read! I truly hope this one makes it to the movie screen one day!
