Publisher's summary

A young man caught between two disparate worlds searches for his place in the universe in a wrenching short story by New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Roanhorse.

Light-years from home, it’s Ira’s second chance. Just another anonymous student at a space station university. Not the orphan whose Earther heritage was erased. Not some social experiment put on display by his adoptive father. Not the criminal recruited by the human rebels. But when Ira’s loyalties clash once again, two wars break out: one on the ground and one within himself. Which will Ira stand with? Which will take him down?

Rebecca Roanhorse’s Falling Bodies is part of The Far Reaches, a collection of science-fiction stories that stretch the imagination and open the heart. They can be read or listened to in one sitting.

Good read, more pointed than a lot of modern sci fi

A good character study and exploration of the psychological effects of being a colonized people. The ending could come with some content warnings, though it made sense in the context of the story’s premise.

Not Quite Sure

I'm not quite sure about this one. I found the space station part interesting but I couldn't get a clear sense of what was going on with the protagonist. Maybe the author intentionally wrote it that way. The ending was surprising and could be triggering for some. It reminded me of several other sci-fi stories and movies. The main message I got from this is 'Space madness (depression) is very real'.

Predictable Character Study

Clearly intended as a character study and is a well drawn descriptive story. That said, the behavior of the main character was far too predictable — from the very beginning.

Heavy, but so good

There are obvious parallels between the colonization of our conquered Earth in this story and the factual colonization of the indigenous people of the Americas, which makes this a powerful read. This has a different feel to Rebecca Roanhorse’s novels I’ve read, but I really enjoy them all. Highly recommended her work.

The situation is a son killed his father. Later realizing he was a political pawn by a Senator. With a tragic ending.

Best in the series

This was a very relatable story. It didn’t even have to have sci-fi themes. But it was the best in the series so far

Could be anywhere, anytime

A story about belonging and not belonging. The dilemma was obvious without details. Well done!

I didn't expect that

Wild sci-fi political emotional mental Rollercoaster. This is definitely a story of manipulation and not everyone can handle that

Needed a bit more

Sigh. Bleak scifi dystopian short touching on colonialism, g*nocide, and politics.

I think it needed a bit more length to fully show the world, politics, and cultural elements Roanhorse was going for. Good narration. Check CWs.
