Publisher's Summary

K. C. Carter has always followed the rules - until she makes a mistake that leaves her the talk of her college campus and brings her carefully arranged life crashing to a halt. Now she's stuck in her small hometown for the summer so she can complete her court-ordered community service. To make matters worse, trouble is living right next door.

Jaxon Trent is the worst kind of temptation and exactly what K. C. was supposed to stay away from in high school. But he never forgot her. She was the one girl who wouldn't give him the time of day and the only one ever to say no. Fate has brought K. C. back into his life - except what he thought was a great twist of luck turns out to be too close for comfort.

As they grow closer, he discovers that convincing K. C. to get out from under her mother's shadow is hard, but revealing the darkest parts of his soul is nearly impossible.

Great series

I really enjoyed this series. I think the author probably could have done a little Better on this book. She saved the excitement for the end and it felt a bit hurried and unfinished to me, but worth the credit .

Penelope Douglas is a master writer

You may not like what you read, but if it disturbs you or touches you in any way, then that's a sign of a good writer who can make you feel.
Penelope's magic with words takes us on a journey under the surface of a young man who likes control. You might not like the toxicity of the tale she spins or the immature mind games the characters play with each other, but damn the woman can write in a way that makes you want to wring their nakes and give them a shaking.... and that's what great authors do. They make us FEEL.

Five big stars for the story.
The reason I'm not giving five stars for the performance is that Abby makes male voices sound like they speak through gritted teeth all the bloody time. Either she's whispering or snarling. She's great in the emotional scenes, but sometimes the males are loving and their words still come out sounding like a threat.

Bad Parenting

Good story with interesting characters and an excellent plot. The author laid out the storyline in a way that held your interest. Two boys who were in a horrible situation at home with a deadbeat dad, but grew up taking care of each other. Jax and Juliette were so good for each other and it was refreshing to see how devoted Jax was to her. But when he suddenly does a 180 on her, it thru me off. He most definitely had some issues. You've got to read this one.

Awoh! Poor K.C. and Jax! ❤

Some parts hit me in the feels and too close to home 😔 and omg I wanted to punch Jax a few times and tell him to grow up or stay in school. F*ck Liam! Aaand still wanting stories for Tate's, Maddock's, and Fallon's dads.

This book's amazing, but has child abuse triggers!

I loved this book. ❤

The only thing I have to say is someone needs to educate Penelope Douglas on firearms. I have no clue what the "nozzle" of a gun is. I'm guessing she meant the "barrel" of the gun. I was extremely disappointed to hear that while listening to that particular scene. I actually listened to it multiple times to make sure I heard it correctly. I frustrates me that more women aren't into firearms.
Penelope Douglas, if you need help with firearms for your books, look me up.

Favorite

I just discovered this series, and even though I’m 5 years late, I’m soooo glad I did. Earlier in the series , I didn’t care for KC’s character, but this book is the best of all of them. Great story and character development.

💜💜

Oh little brother...so Jaxon was a character that I wanted to know more about from the moment he walked onto the page and boy was he worth the wait. He is so closed off and damaged but deep on a level I couldn’t get enough of. KC was the perfect match for him. She is just as damaged and deep but in completely opposite ways. The chemistry was off the charts from the word go and I couldn’t stop!
One of my favorite of the series!

Female narrator is horrific

The story is good if not a little wordy, but it is so hard to get past the female narrators whiny clipped voice. I actually sighed with relief every time the story switched to Jax's POV. I will definitely have to move to the print version for the rest of the series.
