In New York Times best-selling author Linda Castillo’s new thriller Fallen, a rebellious Amish woman leaves the Plain life, but the secrets she takes with her will lead Chief of Police Kate Burkholder down a dark path to danger and death.

When a young woman is found murdered in a Painters Mill motel, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is shocked to discover she once knew the victim. Rachael Schwartz was a charming but troubled Amish girl who left the fold years ago and fled Painters Mill. Why was she back in town? And who would kill her so brutally?

Kate remembers Rachael as the only girl who was as bad at being Amish as Kate was - and those parallels dog her. But the more Kate learns about Rachael's life, the more she's convinced that her dubious reputation was deserved. As a child, Rachael was a rowdy rulebreaker whose decision to leave devastated her parents and best friend. As an adult, she was charismatic and beautiful, a rabble-rouser with a keen eye for opportunity no matter who got in her way. Her no-holds-barred lifestyle earned her a lot of love and enemies aplenty - both English and Amish.

As the case heats to a fever pitch and long-buried secrets resurface, a killer haunts Painters Mill. Someone doesn’t want Rachael’s past - or the mysteries she took with her to the grave - coming to light. As Kate digs deeper, violence strikes again, this time hitting close to home. Will Kate uncover the truth and bring a murderer to justice? Or will a killer bent on protecting a terrible past stop her once and for all - and let the fallen be forgotten?

Praise for Kathleen McInerney as Kate Burkholder in other audiobooks:

"McInerney shifts seamlessly between the many secondary characters, drawing in listeners as the plot unfolds." (AudioFile magazine on A Gathering of Secrets)

"Kathleen McInerney does an excellent job of portraying this diverse cast.... Although the brutality in the story can be quite disturbing in places, McInerney’s grounded reading keeps it from feeling gratuitous. A compelling listen, well-written and expertly narrated." (Publishers Weekly on Pray for Silence)

"McInerney's masterly technique makes aurel sense of the plain and kind Amish people bewildered by the violence, thuggery, and corruption that have come among them. McInerney's characters are alive, all human and believable." (AudioFile magazine on Among the Wicked)

Linda Castillo is one of my all time favorites. she writes the best Amish suspense mysteries. Kate Buck older and Thomas echo are fantastic together. this is another great book.

Love this series

Another wonderful glimpse into the Amish. But the series is more than that. It’s a series led by a strong woman character. The Chief of Police no less. Kate and Tomasetti are good together and feed off each other’s strengths.

A woman who left the Amish Order and Painter’s Mills returns for some reason and is murdered in a horrible way. The story uses flashbacks to show how Rachael was never going to be a typical Amish girl. Kate actually knew her as a child and felt some sympathy for Rachael’s plight.

The characters are fabulous and I love how they’ve evolved over the series. It helps to read the series from the beginning.

Kathleen McInerney is THE best narrator for this series.

I thought there was another half hour left in the book but there’s an interesting discussion with the author and the narrator at the end.

As a male I find myself fiercely attracted to Kate Burkholder. Her raw beauty In uniform, mixed with her bold and confident command of her position as police chief, add fuel to her fiery presence!
I find myself, however, falling into the ranks as a member of her police department, where each of her dispatchers and deputies admire and respect her in their own way.
I am also drawn in by Kate’s frail yet passionate relationship to John Tomasetti. Even though some and often all of my buttons get pushed during their private moments together, I am hopeful that their love can remain intact as the case unfolds.
As a novice, I can ‘ride-along’ with Kate and read her thoughts along the way. I feel compassion as her vulnerabilities are expressed, however, I am impressed by the way she fights through her insecurities in order to find the answers she needs to solve the case.
The Amish community and their compulsion to live in the world and not of the world adds a special dynamic to the story. Kate’s personal connection to the Amish culture gives her a decisive edge as she sorts through each nuance of discovery.
I am captivated by Linda Castillo and her ability to create a virtual out-of-body experience each time I listen to one of her novels!
I have a crush on Kathleen McInerney! Her performances are flawless!
