Publisher's summary

A fast-paced contemporary romance that sizzles from the New York Times best-selling author of Order of Protection where passion for the law isn't the only thing heating up the courtroom.

Isla Shayne knows she's in over her head. As former all-star linebacker Trey Adams' personal lawyer, she's used to handling his business dealings and private financial matters, not murder charges. She needs to find an experienced criminal attorney who speaks her client's language. David Cormack of Garrison, Cormack, and Lawless is exactly what she needs in the courtroom - and the only man she wants in the bedroom.

For David, taking on the Adams case means diving back into a world he thought he'd left behind and colliding head-on with tragic possibilities he's in no mood to face. There's a reason professional football is in his past, and no matter how close Isla gets to the truth, he intends to leave it there. But long days working on the case together lead to hot nights in each other's arms.

As their feelings grow, the case takes a deadly twist that could change the game between the two lovers forever.

Predictable murder romance but highlights the disease CTE

The story is the second in Lexi Blake’s Courting Justice series and adds in a few McKay Taggert operatives for good measure. This book features a murder which includes a famous football star suffering CTE, his personal attorney Isla Shayne, and former football player criminal attorney David Cormack. The plot is suspenseful, with snappy dialogue except when David is self diagnosing and playing martyr or when Isla is periodically reminiscing about her teenage love. The villains are obvious early on so the other finger pointing doesn’t work but the story and other characters are interesting. Some comic relief is also provided by a ridiculously narcissistic assistant DA and Erin Taggert’s character is very entertaining. Alexandra Shawnee is ok as a female narrator but she has limited range for the number of characters in some scenes and she is not particularly great with male voices. A dual or duet performance would have been a big plus. Worth the credit but the narration needs more.

Really enjoy this series

I am enjoying this series. I found this one much more interesting, in that it dealt with football and brain injuries. I thought that this was an excellent story and the added mystery was perfect!

🌻Made me feel a bit guilty 🌻

🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻V from Kansas🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

I’m an avid football fan and this book, and it’s subject matter, made me feel a bit disgusted with my ignorance about CTE. After all, football fanatics are part of the reason that this disease has been ignored, for so long. The plot, itself, was ok but the real importance of this book, in my opinion, is the inside look at how the repeated head trauma affects athletes’ lives; long after their professional career.

I enjoyed the book, overall, but I’m really glad that the author chose to bring more awareness to CTE and all the sorrow it can cause.
