Publisher's Summary

From the internationally acclaimed, best-selling author of Brother, I'm Dying, a collection of vividly imagined stories about community, family, and love.

Rich with hard-won wisdom and humanity, set in locales from Miami and Port-au-Prince to a small unnamed country in the Caribbean and beyond, Everything Inside is at once wide in scope and intimate, as it explores the forces that pull us together, or drive us apart, sometimes in the same searing instant.

In these eight powerful, emotionally absorbing stories, a romance unexpectedly sparks between two wounded friends; a marriage ends for what seem like noble reasons, but with irreparable consequences; a young woman holds on to an impossible dream even as she fights for her survival; two lovers reunite after unimaginable tragedy, both for their country and in their lives; a baby's christening brings three generations of a family to a precarious dance between old and new; a man falls to his death in slow motion, reliving the defining moments of the life he is about to lose.

This is the indelible work of a keen observer of the human heart - a master at her best.

Critic Reviews

"Robin Miles's luminous narration will make converts of those who usually abstain from the short story genre.... Miles's delicate accents and flawless pronunciation of Haitian-Creole and French words adds authenticity. With Miles at the helm, listeners can easily imagine all the moments prior to and following the events she portrays, and that gift makes this a rare auditory experience." (AudioFile Magazine)

I liked it but I wanted to like it more than I did.

I guess I expect more from any book about Haitian culture so I may come off overly critical here. I have been a huge fan of Edwidge Danticat since she wrote Krik! Krak! and absolutely loved The Farming of Bones. I enjoyed this book just not quite as much as I did those. To be fair, I believe it may be the narration. I can speak and understand the languages spoken in this book. I happen to love Robin Miles as a narrator EXCEPT when she is narrating Créole or French words. Some words she pronounces well, others she absolutely gets wrong. I really wish Audible would hire someone (like me) to help these narrators pronounce the words properly. It would make the listening experience a whole lot more enjoyable. Danticat and Miles are still excellent at what they do and I will definitely continue to listen and support them both.

For those who understand mourning

Poignant, poetic and gut wrenching tales of the complexities of love and loss. Beautifully told.

A wonderful set of short stories

A wonderful book of short stories that I read on Reese Witherspoon's recommendation. This was her August 2020 book club pick. For full review: https://katiegreviews.wordpress.com/2020/08/31/review-everything-inside-by-edwidge-danticat/

Edwidge does it again!

Edwidge is my favorite author since high school. And she’s done it again with this series of short stories capturing the dynamic lives of Haitian people. Each story was as moving as the next and always tackles a larger narrative that’s perfect for discussion in a group.

struggled to finish

i really wanted to enjoy this book but didn't make it to the end. with short stories you have to jump into a situation/story with no context. I struggled to place these stories and this was made more difficult by the speed of the narration. she described things too quickly for me to visualise. I might have enjoyed this if I had read it. The pace of the narration was too fast for me and I found the stories tedious. I stuck with it until the last two stories then just gave up.
