Akbar Gbajabiamila, the host of NBC’s hit Emmy-nominated show, American Ninja Warrior, did not have an easy path to success. One of seven children to Nigerian immigrant parents, he grew up in the Crenshaw district of South Central Los Angeles during the 1980s and 90s, a time when the neighborhood was fraught with riots and gang violence. With dreams of playing professional basketball, Gbajabiamila found success not in the sport he loved, but in football. Late in his high school career, Gbajabiamila suited up with pads for the first time and was thrown into the complex sport of football. He climbed major hurdles to play college football and then professional football. After playing in the NFL, it was only after years of hard work behind-the-scenes in radio and television that he was offered the job to be the host of American Ninja Warrior.

Outstanding work

I admit, I originally picked this up because I'm a big fan of American Ninja Warrior, and I'm a huge fan of Akbar. I couldn't be more happy that I did. This book was exactly what I needed to hear, and it's given me the strength to try and align myself with my purpose again. And people are starting to notice. If you need some encouragement, or are looking for a place to start following your dreams? Pick up this book. It's worth every penny and every moment.

I didn’t realize I needed this until I started listening

I had no idea what to expect from this book. Honestly, I didn’t have any real expectations for it. I heard it advertised on tv and had a few book credits collect so I thought, sure, why not?
Wow. I enjoyed this so much! While there are a few inspiring stories from some of the ninjas you see on TV this book was about so much more than that. It was more an autobiography of a man who has seen much failure in his own life, come from very little, but never gave up. There are so many quotable words of wisdom given along the way that I think I will have to give this book a second listen to write them down. I felt encouraged to pick up a dream I had started to lay down and continue pursuing it. This book was such an easy listen, I love that it is read by the author. It has been a big encouragement and inspiration. I recommend for anyone and everyone at any chapter of your life.
