Publisher's Summary

Constable Evans joins Sergeant Watkins to follow a trail of clues that leads them to the South of England and then to France, and finally to the conclusion that a dangerous killer is loose in Llanfair, in Rhys Bowen's fourth Evan Evans mystery, Evan and Elle.

There is both excitement and dismay in Llanfair when a new French restaurant opens. The glamorous owner, Madame Yvette, tries to win over the locals, and everything seems to be going well until a string of fires plagues the town. One night the restaurant burns down, and a body is found in the rubble.

Easy listening

Narrator does an awesome job with the Welsh, though his French accent is a bit stereotypical.

Evan Evan

My mother recommended these books to me! Read them in the Early 2000’s. Listening to them now and enjoying them just as much and missing Mom. She was quite the reader!

Better in Print

Even though it's the fourth in the series, it's the first I've encountered. It's a nice, straightforward mystery that gets more complicated as the plot progresses. It's set in a fictional town located around Llanberis in Wales, and having spent some time in the area, when real towns and mountains are mentioned I was able to imagine it. But I wish the book set the scene a little better with more description. Overall, I enjoyed it,
My problem is with the narrator who projects his voice as if he were onstage, his French accent is awful, and while he gets the proper lilt of the Welsh accent, it is often tinged with an Irish brogue, which I found off-putting. I'm interested enough to want more, so, now I'll read the series in chronological order, but I'll read it on my Kindle.

Welsh accent

I found the fake Welsh accent and the incorrect pronunciation of Welsh names irritating and could not finish the book. It would have been better if he dropped the fake accent and continued in his normal accent. Very amateurish and disappointing narration.

Always easy and fun

I like these books for the same reason I like Agatha Christie. They’re lighthearted and easy listens. When I want a book but can’t make up my mind, I always go for one of these.

Charming, atmospheric, intriguing!

I love these books! The narrator adds an important dimension that would be missing if you read it to yourself silently. Each book is better than the last.

Why…

… oh why use an American vice actor that can’t actually get the accent right, nor is able to properly pronounce Welsh names/ place names??? Just WHY? I’m sure there would be enough great Welsh speaking voice actors that would get it right.
The performance is otherwise good, we’ll read etc. except a few Americanisms that give it away, like “ turtleneck sweater” which in the UK would actually be a “polo neck sweater”.

More Evan Evans at last!!

I love this series and am really glad they’ve finally been released. Uncharacteristically, I think Roger Clark was not asas relaxed and natural as he has been in the previous books. It’s a bit stilted and sounds like he was instructed to overdo the Welsh accent.
I was excited (!) to hear them going off to my hometown of Eastbourne even though he pronounced Lewes as ‘Loos’ instead of ‘Loo-iss’ but I guess no one is perfect!!

Thoroughly enjoyed, thanks Audible - off to bag the next one!

Evan and Elle

Another terrific murder mystery this time with a 'foreign' influence seemingly cursing all the problems, along with local foreign hate crime. With fun and jealousy keeping the pace skipping along. Read brilliantly again by Roger Clark.
