Publisher's summary

In 1956, Caedmon had the great fortune to record Eudora Welty reading some of her finest stories. In her sweetly vibrant Mississippi drawl, Ms. Welty deftly draws the listener in to the uproariously multilayered "Why I Live at the P.O.", the spontaneous "Powerhouse", and the insightful voice of women's truths in "Petrified Man". Ms. Welty's reading brings immediacy and resonance to these wonderful tales.

Lovely Stories

I have been a fan of Eudora Welty's for as long as I can remember, and I was quite excited about the prospect of hearing her reading her own exquisite short stories. It was wonderful to hear her voice, but the dear lady spoke so fast that it's very difficult to understand. Still,if you're a Welty fan, it's well worth a download. Enjoy.

Energetic, inspired stories

Eudora Welty reads 3 of her stories that use dialogue brilliantly to evoke Mississippi of the 1940s and the people who lived there. I especially enjoyed "Powerhouse", a free-flowing portrait of a jazz band leader playing music and taking his band out for a break. It is true, as one other reviewer noted, that Welty speaks rapidly, especially in the first story, but I was able to make the adjustment before long.

Delicious - I wanted more!

Ms. Welty's reading of her short stories is mesmerizing. I felt as though I were watching a play, or acting as an anthropologist looking into a world I'd never witnessed. She vividly takes you to a time and place with sparely written but richly inhabited characters. Deeply funny, moving, and very short. Highly recommended.

Delightful

For this audiobook, Eudora Welty reads three of her classic stories: Why I Live at the P.O., Powerhouse, and The Petrified Man. It was delightful to hear Ms. Welty’s voice, and the reading highlights her wonderful ear for language and dialogue as well as a mischievous sense of humor. The first story was read at a faster pace than the others, but I think the speed fits the personality of the story’s narrator. I believe this audiobook was based on an old LP recording which explains why it isn’t longer—I wish it was....

Eudora

I found out about this and wanted to read it because my decades of using beloved Eudora email client finally ended recently. And I thought I should see what it is named for. So I bought this and listened to Why I Live at the Post Office. She reads it so fast, that I found it kind of irritating. It is a nice enough story, I suppose, although generally not my sort of thing. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had not seemed like she were racing to catch a train.
