Refreshing, magical, lovely

It's very rare that audiobooks about music - especially, novels, actually feature music as part of the production. Escapement does this to wonderful, moving effect.

A riveting, beautifully paced and plotted book that's already good becomes great for the addition of the music.

Using pseudonyms for Johannes Brahms, Clara Schumann and her husband, Robert, Kristen Wolf crafts a story that feels very real and immediate. In some ways, it's not exactly "feels like you're there" historical fiction, but it also very much is. The liberties the author takes that take it out of the "realistic for the time period" serve the story perfectly; they work. There's a visceral immediacy; shopping, cooking meals, the presence of a house cat - that all add to that.

Escapement is part love story and also a much needed shoutout to a woman composer. And even though she's a fictional character, her story feels like an homage to the many women composers whose music is as good as music gets, but for many reasons were erased from history. In Escapement, their labours and beautiful music receive a certain acknowledgement.
As if to say, we cannot hear your music, but we remember and acknowledge what was lost - or hidden under the name of a man. And as for the music that HAS been left to us, by Clara Schumann and many other master women composers, we listen with reverent appreciation!
