Publisher's summary

On a summer night in 1932, 12-year-old Joel Fitchett wanders into an East Texas diner badly beaten and carrying his unconscious brother, Clancy. Although both boys claim they have no memory of what happened, the horrific details are etched into their minds as deep as the scar left across Joel's face.

Thirteen years later, both men still struggle with the aftershocks of that long-ago night and the pact they made to hide the truth. When they find themselves at the center of a murder investigation, they make a decision that will change everything: a second lie, a second pact, and, for a time, a second chance.

In 1991, college student Garrison Stark travels to Texas chasing a rumor that Clancy Fitchett is his biological grandfather. Clancy has been missing since 1946, and Garrison hopes to find him and, through doing so, find a family. What he doesn't expect to discover is a tangle of secrets spanning 60 years involving Clancy, Joel, and the woman they both loved.

Put this on the top of your list!

Wow! THIS is how to write a dual-timeline, character-driven
mystery! I cannot recommend Shanessa Gluhm’s Enemies of Doves enough. Equal
part confounding murder mystery, equal part gut-wrenching love story (and
triangle), this book hooks you in from the first page and does not let go. Though
it revolves around a decades-old murder and scar (figuratively and literally),
at its core is a quest for belonging, truth and family. The twists and turns I did not see coming and the love story had me shedding
tears numerous times. All the characters are engaging, unique and sympathetic,
with a great sense of humor, as well. Gluhm also did an excellent job researching,
transporting the reader back to Texas and Louisiana in the 30s, 40s and 90s. But it’s the stellar writing that really shines in Gluhm’s debut novel, with poignant
lines like this: “His head formed the words, but they stayed there, unwilling to
leave his mouth and become a binding agreement."I can’t wait to read her next book!

This should be a MOVIE!

I loved this book and had to have the Audiobook too. And just like when I read the book the first time...I just couldn't put this book down! The audio reading gave me an even deeper appreciation of these amazing characters. The voice actor did an excellent job bringing it to life with accents and women's voices too, but the true star is author Shanessa Gluhm! She wove a tale so well that it had effortless flow and made it perfect to picture the events as they unfolded. It NEEDS to be a movie! You're in for a great ride with this selection.
Well done!

Wow! Couldn’t turn it off!

First, the narration was rock solid. Second, Gluhm’s storyline kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing the entire story. I struggled to ever push pause or turn it off to go to bed. I just had to know what happened next. I couldn’t have predicted the plot and couldn’t be more pleased with the result of the story. I’ll be buying every book she pens.
