An insider's account of the impeachments of Donald Trump

How do you protect a country from a man who lies, who obstructs justice, and who seeks to cheat with foreign powers to get reelected? Our constitution offers one remedy: impeachment. On December 18, 2019, President Donald J. Trump became just the third president in US history to be impeached by the House of Representatives. And then, on January 13, 2021, he became the first president to be impeached twice.

In Endgame, Congressman Eric Swalwell offers his personal account of his path to office all the way to House impeachment manager and how he and his colleagues resisted, investigated, and impeached a corrupt president. Swalwell takes listeners inside Congress and through the impeachment process, from Trump’s disgraceful phone call with the Ukrainian president to depositions in the SCIF, and from caucus meetings and conversations with the Speaker to the bombshell public hearings and the historic vote, and then what followed - the 2020 election, the insurrection on January 6, 2021, the second impeachment and second trial. Endgame is fascinating, a gripping listen by a unique witness to extraordinary events.

The Deprivation of Our Democracy

Endgame, Inside the Impeachment of Donald J. Trump, by Eric Swalwell. In the first instance, it is a (re)introduction by Congressman Swalwell, to America as to who he is, his history, values, and political philosophy. Do expect to see him again running for President of the United States. In its second instance, it is a history of the unorthodox dalliances of the Trump administration, not with sex, but with its effort to take control of our democracy and make it a fiefdom of Trump’s personality and adoration of himself. Congressman Swalwell depicts to us a man who does not understand our American way, or how our constitutional systems provide for our unique greatness as a nation and a society. Congressman Swalwell rather describes a man, Trump, who hopes to be the first dictator of the United States. There is nothing harsh or brash stated here, just a retelling of the History of Trump as President, with this inclination on the part of the man to demonstrate himself to have destructive intent and all that has saved us so far is Trump’s innate incompetence and buffoonery in holding the office of the president. The book, though, goes deeper and provides the same analysis for many of the Trump enablers, for example, Devin Nunes and more.

I know we have all lived through the Trump era of Russian, Ukrainian, stories and lies, lies, lies, and inability to perform as a president in the pandemic, and tone-deafness to the BLM movement, but having Congressman Swalwell tell the story somehow gives guidance to us all to understand why Trump and his ineptitude to meet these moments is a danger us. Trump is not a hero; He is a peril. For another example, Congressman Swalwell instructs us on how the Trump Administration refused to respond to Congressional investigation and were obstructionists of the American system that has operated our nation for so long. Oversight is important. It means the President cannot act for his interest against the people’s interests. But act in Trump’s interest over the people’s interest was and remains thematic in the Trump Administration. Normally, Republicans, one would expect, would not give up their power to the President. Yet, today’s Republicans are too callow to protect their selves much less their constituent’s interests. This firsthand insight into this Republican Presidency and this Republican Congress is insightful.

I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this as much as I did. (I’m a political scientist and purchased to increase my examination of various viewpoints.) This book is recommended. The best part of the Book: Learning was getting a first-hand witness account of the inner workings of the House of Representatives works under Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Did not disappoint!

During the impeachment trial, Congressman Eric Swalwell caught my attention with his smart questioning and how he always seemed to get to the heart of matter. So many times I found myself yelling at the TV, “EXACTLY! Tell them!” I started to look forward to when he would talk, because I knew he would hold their feet to the fire.
So when I saw that Rep. Swalwell was releasing a book, I knew I had to get it.
It did not disappoint!! I also enjoyed getting to switch back and forth between the e-book and audiobook, which Mr. Swalwell narrated himself. I am recommending this book to all of my friends!

Thoroughly enjoyed!

I loved hearing the behind the scenes story on impeachment. (I do think one more person as an impeachment manager could have helped).
Thanks to Rep Swalwell and his family for the sacrifices they make so Eric can continue to do the hard work he does for all of us.

End Game

Even though many of us saw in real time the impeachment of Trump, it is great to be reminded. News cycles turn over at a rapid clip and the smoke bombs from the White House are non stop so it is easy to forget the facts and we risk buying into the “ alternative” interpretations by Trump. Swalwell wants future generations to know and remember the truth and he has done so. His narrative flows pleasantly and the many facts are easy to follow. I highly recommend this book.

Changed my mind

As a dedicated Dem I found myself not really liking Swalwell but after listening to this book I feel differently. His inside story of Trump impeachment is fascinating and brings new info but also how he praises so many others involved and his personal stories added depth to what I knew about him. He reads himself, which always adds so much. I thoroughly enjoyed and learned a few things

The truth should set us free

Thank you Eric for telling the cold hard truth.
I can not believe the corruption rotting the Republican Party. Let the November 3rd election replace corruption with true honorable Americans so we are once again The land of the brave and land of the free.🙏🏻
