Publisher's summary

Destined to Die Young is the definitive examination of why the world lost Elvis Presley on August 16, 1977, when he was only 42 years old. Author Sally Hoedel has painstakingly researched the subject and offers factual and scientific data—plus never-before-published information she gained by interviewing people who personally knew Elvis—to support her claim that Elvis Presley was never going to live a long life.

In this well-documented book, Hoedel explores how prescription medication was only one aspect of his compromised health and did not ultimately cause his demise. She examines Elvis Presley—a son, husband, father, and devoted friend—while ploughing through the negative hype and legendary myths surrounding the man. Elvis’ downward spiral of health struggles is presented and, for the first time ever, it is revealed that he suffered from disease in nine of eleven bodily systems, five of which were present from birth. This book dispels the long-held theory that abuse of prescription drugs is what killed Elvis.

Destined to Die Young is for anyone who is curious to know the true story of one of the world’s most famous cultural icons. For longtime Elvis Presley fans, it provides answers to lingering questions surrounding his death. You may be surprised to learn that, based on Elvis Presley’s family history and the genes he was dealt, nothing could have saved the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Finally, medical information.

it's incredibly sad that such a good person, that took care of so many, has constantly been speculated about, and judged by so many, simply because they didn't have all of the information. it seems very unfair to me. it's a testament to who he was. He was human, he had pride, and he tried to not feel sorry for himself. He most likely would not have lived a very long life. But, the time he had on this earth, he gave so much to so many. He should not be forgotten for all he did, and treated as if he were nothing, by people who don't bother to learn the truth. He never called himself a King. His fans did. He helped change many things, along with many other people. He should not be forgotten, or made a joke out of. Thank you for your responsible research, and giving back the honor he deserves....

The whole picture...

There is always more to the story and this thoroughly researched book proves that. It is an unbiased view presented from a medical standpoint, far beyond what was known to the public, or even many around Elvis, at the time. It's shocking how many physical ailments he had, yet pushed himself for his family, friends and fans. This book tells his story through the years, starting well before he was born. I highly recommend reading this to get a more complete picture of the life and death of Elvis Presley, which is free on sensationalism.

Great insight .. however

I have the physical book which was a fascinating read and explains so much about Elvis and his acute health issues. What could be better than as a recap, Unfortunately as Dr's should not treat there family members, the narrator definately should not have narrated her own book. Her narration was extremely was dreadful

Wow! So much I never knew! Outstanding!

I am a life long huge Elvis fan and I learned so much about Elvis and his health struggles. Sally did an outstanding job with research and it flowed within the book. I had my own idea about what happened to him in his final moments and this book is the only one that ever shared my assumption. I wish everyone could read this book. Thank you Sally! I can’t wait to read Destined to Fly! TCB⚡️

Invaluable Information that gives tremendous insight into Elvis’ life.

Invaluable Information that gives tremendous insight into Elvis’ life. Sally obviously put a lot of time and effort into her research. I greatly appreciate the insight that can only be gained from those closest to Elvis. Genetics touched all aspects of his life. It was both a blessing and a curse all at the same time. I hope people will look beyond what they think they know and see the effects of the perfect storm that caused the demise of the most charismatic man ever. Elvis is the greatest entertainer of all time!

Love!

Loved this book and all the information it gives us. It’s so sad to know how he suffered all those years and no one knew exactly what was wrong with him. And now I wonder if that’s why Lisa Marie passed so young!

An eye opening look into's The King's health

Listening to this audiobook might change your perspective on the death of Elvis Presley. Since his death in 1977, we have been bombarded with rumors and speculation on what exactly happened the "The King of Rock 'n' Roll." Despite rumors he was spotted in a Burger King in Michigan, there has been speculation that Presley faked his death. There are also rumors that "The King" was murdered as a result of his manager's escalating gambling debts.

"Destined to Die Young" is first book to exam that most of his ailments were genetic, stemming from the fact that his maternal grandparents were first cousins. The goal of author Sally A. Hoedel is present the theory that Elvis was destined to die young, and prove her case with well researched medical data. Hoedel's assertion is that Presley was born with faulty DNA, damaged recessive genes that were most likely not replaced.

Hoedel points out that both Elvis and his mother died early, Gladys Presley passed away at age 46, and Elvis was on 42 years of age when the world lost "The King." Even though it was not uncommon for close relations to marry, at the time, there is a higher risk of inheriting unhealthy genes when parents are closely related. The author also notes that there is even higher probability among male offspring.

Early on, Elvis suffered from insomnia, and turned to prescription medication. Elvis and his mother suffered from liver disease, in fact, "The King's" liver and heart were abnormal sizes at the time of his passing. The author points out that nine of the Elvis's eleven body systems suffered from disorders or disease. Elvis and Gladys likely inherited liver disease from their family. According to the author, Elvis's immune system was comprised, as he had chronic sore throat, and ear infections.

Hoedel dissects the autopsy report, and notes the medical world never investigated that genetics could have played a factor in Presley's early demise. This is a highly recommended listen for Elvis Presley fans!
