Interesting twist on a campy 40s detective story with lots of over-the-top dialogue. Fun twist was the effect lighting had on Eddie. Obviously going to be more stories in the series but this ending was too abrupt.

The first half of this story was somewhat confusing for me, not sure where it was going. The second half finally pulled it all together. I felt I was sitting in a science classroom listening to a teacher combine the lesson with a story. In the end, I felt this could become a good series if there was more story less homework.
On the other hand, this narrator was awesome. At one point in the story that dealt with hypnosis, his voice almost had me under. Great job!

E. E. King has written a classic noir detective story in the modern-day, with an intriguing sci-fi twist. Eddie's abilities, as they develop and he gains a better understanding of them, are different and pretty original. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way, and emotional hooks that make you feel for the situations Eddie is forced to confront. The performance is solid and really helps with getting inside Eddie's head. The only downside that felt completely unnecessary to me was the occasional harshly derogatory comments/thoughts by Eddie about religion in general (especially Christianity and Mormonism) and Texas/Texans, many of which I found highly ignorant of the beliefs and knowledge base of the average members of those religions I have met and people I know who tend more conservative (including those in Texas). While not a Phillip K. Dick level of making you think about the implications of new technology or worldview (due to the 'right' conclusions being very clearly laid out), it is reminiscent of the tone of many of Dick's works. Overall I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of Phillip K Dick or a good noir detective story. Good as an introduction to a series but also works well as a stand-alone story.

As origin stories of super heroes or otherwise 'specially gifted' people, this one is okay. It has a fun original premise, and a nice 'grumpy detective' tone. However it also suffers from a LOT of exposition, so much so it often seems like a wannebe school book of some sorts. Several characters explaining the plot to eachother, and it worsens toward the end, where the 'bad guy' actually takes quite some time to explain everything.

Also, the narrator does not help. I suspect the story would be better if I had simply read it; the narrator reads everything with the same intonation and that does not make for a suspenseful story. I didn't like the strange softer voice he chose for female characters, and that he sometimes mixes up with his male characters.

I have to admit that although I finished the book, I couldn't concentrate through all of it, finding my thoughts wandering to other things.

The author can write though, and has a very promising knack for witty banter.

Perhaps the sequel will be better.
